MSNBC - Dusty books going digital (Jan 26 2005 15:59 GMT) - kctipton writes "Here's a new story on MSNBC about digitizing (scanning) old books, but NOT by libraries. the historical society and many other institutions with large collections are doing something they see as means of survival: They’re going digital — creating and uploading images of many items in their collections for all the World Wide Web to see. [Related internet content: The Open Directory Project has a Digital Library Development category as well as one for Digital Libraries and E-Text Archives (products of scanned texts that have been run through OCR software). |

Asteroid named after Douglas Adams (Jan 26 2005 15:59 GMT) - Alan Boyle, science editor at MSNBC says Asteroid Douglasadams was among the 71 newly named celestial objects announced Tuesday by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass. Other honorees range from Ball Aerospace and the city of Las Vegas to the sometimes-overlooked co-discoverer of the DNA double helix, Rosalind Franklin. The H2G2 Movie is just a few months away. |

It was to be an adventure of a few months in the wild West, but with the silver boom in full swing, Twain stayed for years. This is a witty and fond recollection of a bubble. Twain and a friend were millionaires -- for ten days. Chastened, Twain got a real job and invested prudently and was about to sell out for about $100K in Civil War dollars -- not a fortune, to be sure, but enough to retire on if he chose. |
