Seeing the cites: Hermione Granger's Solution (Jan 26 2005 23:50 GMT) - As I've mentioned earlier, one of the unsung benefits of this job is the access to reading materials. I want to share the benefits of my discoveries with you. So welcome to a new occasional feature of this blog, something I'm currently calling: Seeing the cites*. I'm not going to share the full-text articles on this blog, but hopefully this will give you enough information to (a) decide whether you want to read them, and (b) find them through your local libraries. |

Kodak Bets Old Strategy Can Go Digital (Jan 26 2005 23:50 GMT) - There is a good article today in the New York Times about Kodak's business model in a changing photographic market: 'For decades, Eastman Kodak thrived on a classic business model: sell lots of cameras at low prices to chalk... |

Jonah Goldberg on Zarqawi and Iraqi Elections (Jan 26 2005 23:50 GMT) - Jonah Goldberg talks about Musab al-Zarqawi in his column today, which is an important read. To the naysayers who deny that our enemies in Iraq are specific terrorist groups, Zarqawi has an answer. Our enemies aren't the Iraqi people. We're trying to help them and bring them a democratically elected representative government for the first time in history. Many (especially liberals and the ignorant) in this country think this isn't the case. |

Paper Trail for Elections in NC? (Jan 26 2005 23:50 GMT) - According to this story in the News and Observer of Raleigh, an important change may be in the works for North Carolina's election process. Many election officials discounted concerns that electronic voting necessitated paper ballot receipts for the voter. Such a requirement was seen as unnecessary, until thousands of votes were lost in Carteret County due to a machine malfunction. |

NIRF: Neutralizing IEDs with Microwaves (Jan 26 2005 23:50 GMT) - Because rebel Iraqi forces have been surprisingly effective in rigging together improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from things like garage door openers and cellphones (and, you know, bombs). The Pentagon isn't having it—they're spending no end of money to make sure we've got something more effective to seek-and-destroy them than shooting everything that looks like it might blow up. According to DefenseTech, researchers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center's Dahlgren Laboratory are work... |

Sony Says PSP Games Still Region Free (Jan 26 2005 23:50 GMT) - Despite putting a region code on their games (as seen in the FCC manual), Sony has stated again that games for their upcoming portable platform will be region free. For now, though, they've told Gamespot we should mellow and enjoy. ... |

Bush makes Social Security "personal" (Jan 26 2005 23:50 GMT) - Not surprisingly, in his press conference today the president dismissed all questions regarding the specifics of his Social Security privatization scheme. Bush declined even to acknowledge obvious mathematical truisms -- for instance that the government will need to borrow a couple trillion dollars or so to cover the transition costs associated with pulling money out of Social Security and setting up private investment accounts. Still, despite his reticence, it was possible to see in Bush's word... |

the daily wtf (Jan 26 2005 23:49 GMT) - I was just introduced to this site: The Daily WTF "Curious Perversions in Information Technology." I would start pointing to each good entry but I can't, they're all hilarious (or sad, depending on which side of the fence you're on). The main page is (as far as I can see) a blog-like rendering of the Daily WTF Forum from the forums on the site (check out the other forums too). Most excellent--subscribed. |
