New Health Care Savings Plans Are Not Working (Jan 27 2005 23:01 GMT) - Health plans with high patient-paid deductibles, embraced by many Republicans as a market-based solution to quell soaring medical-care costs, lead to poorer quality care and increasing patient debt, a study released on Thursday said. With the new plans, individuals typically pay the first $1000, or $2000 for families, spent on medical care each year. The plans are coupled with so-called health savings accounts, or HSAs, which allow patients to set aside tax-free funds to defray health expenses. |

Croquet 3D Operating System Advances (Jan 27 2005 23:00 GMT) - The Croquet 3D operating system project has released an initial developer release and is being adopted in a commercial product by a simulated learning company called 3Dsolve. Croquet is a software architecture designed to enable collaboration between users across the Web in a shared 3D space. It is not merely a 3D user interface for visualizing file systems or web sites, but a complete development and delivery platform for doing real collaborative work in a distributed 3D space. It is totally object-oriented, so there is no distinction between the user environment and the development environment. Unlike managed virtual worlds such as Everquest or The Sims, Croquet is based on an ad hoc, peer-to-peer network. |

cooking for engineers (Jan 27 2005 23:00 GMT) - Excellently geeky, with easy to read (for those who prefer not to) diagrammatic recipe instructions is cooking for engineers. This might be good for politics students too - I once heard one utter 'I would make a bacon sandwich, if I knew how.' [Found somewhere, if you've mentioned this recently it ... |

Plácido Domingo announces retirement (Jan 27 2005 23:00 GMT) - Okay, not until 2008, but I am gutted, devastated. Sure, I knew it was going to happen eventually, and I'm sure that he will carry on conducting after that. But when I read this news, I just felt like I had received a punch in the solar plexus. And I told my cruel, cruel fiancé who laughed and sniggered (he's jealous... |

Conform in your browser/OS choice, or be arrested (Jan 27 2005 23:00 GMT) - Use a non-standard browser and operating system to donate to the tsunami relief effort and get yourself arrested by the London police. If BoingBoing are right that all this guy was doing was simply donating money using the Lynx browser on a Sun Solaris system, then he can so nail the rozzers for wrongful arrest. I would also question how the police came to be arresting someone apparently upon nothing more than the opinion of a British Telecom employee that a crime had actually taken place at all. We have laws against this sort of abuse of power and they need to be exercised. |

List of Famous Unsolved Codes and Ciphers (Jan 27 2005 23:00 GMT) - [codes] Famous Unsolved Codes and Ciphers ... 'Alexander d'Agapeyeff wrote an elementary book on cryptography in 1939, entitled "Codes and Ciphers." In the first edition, he included a challenge cipher. Nobody's solved it, and he embarrassedly admitted later that he no longer knew how he'd encrypted it. It was left out of the second and later editions. |

une-vie : about:firefox (Jan 27 2005 23:00 GMT) - Bonjour à tous !
