Snow and Avalanche Report: Week 4-2005 (Jan 28 2005 15:59 GMT) - As everyone will no doubt know, the week’s excellent snow conditions were marred by a series of avalanche accidents, starting on Saturday with the death of a snowboarder in the resort of Montricher in the Maurienne valley. Yesterday afternoon a father and son were caught with tragic consequences, taking a shortcut between the pistes in the resort of Le Tourmalet. Buried Snowshoer Rescued Alive (Jan 28 2005 15:59 GMT) - A professional snowshoe leader, resident of Chamonix, was found after being buried for around 40 minutes under an avalanche. The man was leading a group of tourists on snowshoes when he instructed his party to stop while he tested a suspect slope. |

Pyrénées Avalanche Claims Son (Jan 28 2005 15:59 GMT) - A father and son were hit by an avalanche in the ski resort of le Tourmalet close to the Pic du Midi observatory in the Hautes Pyrénées. They had taken an off-piste short cut at the bottom of the Come-l'Ayse piste in the Super Barèges sector. |

Avalanches Claim Fifth Victim (Jan 28 2005 15:59 GMT) - Late on Tuesday night friends of Raphael Potin began to worry about his whereabouts. After a tour of the bars of Val d’Isère they alerted the Gendarmes. The 36 year old, former ski instructor with the UCPA and currently working for the Misty Fly Snowboard School had last been seen by a friend on the north face of the Bellevarde early in the afternoon.
