A Cleveland MLS Reaction Is Borne (Jan 28 2005 19:59 GMT)

- AshtabulaGuy writes "A recent story submitted by Heidi Landskroener flagged that Syracuse University is planning to partner with Case Western Reserve University to bring library science studies back to Case Western Reserve University in Greater Cleveland. Christine Borne, a leading "NexGen librarian", offered some reactions to the news by raising the matter of possible layoffs that could erupt if county-wide regionalization of libraries in Cuyahoga County occured after the present study is completed. Although there may become more competition in terms of educating new librarians, a glut of librarians may occur if Cuyahoga County libraries are consolidated down to only the Cuyahoga County Public Library and the Cleveland Public Library. There may be the problem that an increase in possibilities for librarian education may become superfluous or even harmful if consolidating regionalization occurs due to Ohio Libraries and Local Government State Fund cut issues."

"I don't think it's a very good idea," Behrend said. "We don't get paid to be a librarian. You're never compensated for it and the responsibility of running a branch is very big.

Of OLUG, XQuery and mild suprises. (Jan 28 2005 19:58 GMT)

- Maybe I'm too cynical and jaded, but two events somewhat suprised me today. The first one was a series of e-mails on the OLUG mailing list talking about the announcement that Microsoft would be denying access to Windows Update to folks using likely pirated versions of Windows XP. Most of those folks who had something to say about seemed to indicate a positive feeling about it, or at least that it made sense. Of course, there were plenty of reminders to the effective of "open source software can't be pirated in the first place." Can't disagree with that, but still, I thought is good to see folks "getting it" about what boils down to business -- not a technology -- decision on Microsoft's part.

Blackberry emissions [Jeremy W White] (Jan 28 2005 19:57 GMT)

- I have been informed that 'blackberries' (the phone type as opposed to the edible kind, but even that distinction may not be enough for some of you wags) emit 40 times the radiation of 'normal' mobiles and therefore should never be held at the ear. 'Blue tooth' remote ear piece and mic should be used, I am told. Come on ye techies; a) is this corroborated anywhere? b) if true, what must people be doing to their kidneys, and other delicate bits, when wearing them on a belt?

mixture (Jan 28 2005 19:57 GMT)

- Until recently, people used a technique called symmetric key cryptography to secure information being transmitted across public networks in order to make mixture shopping more secure. This method involves encrypting and decrypting a mixture message using the same key, which must be known to both parties in order to keep it private. The key is passed from one party to the other in a separate transmission, making it vulnerable to being stolen as it is passed along. With public-key cryptography, separate keys are used to encrypt and decrypt a message, so that nothing but the encrypted message needs to be passed along. Each party in a mixture transaction has a *key pair* which consists of two keys with a particular relationship that allows one to encrypt a message that the other can decrypt.
