The way we were, and are:.. (Feb 01 2005 01:59 GMT) - A while back I had plans to right a series of posts of small, yet significant events that have happened in my life. Two stories followed; How I Lost My Virginity To A (Future) Lesbian and One Of The Most Selfish Things I Ever Did, but then I sort of ran out of steam after that. |

Gillmor Gang on Podcasting and the Future of Public Radio (Feb 01 2005 01:56 GMT) - If you're employed in the technology sector, and have never listened to an interview or recorded session from IT Conversations, what are you doing? The Gillmor Gang is a regular feature on this site--a recorded conversation with some of the smartest of the technorati (they're kind of heavy breathers, though). I rarely listen to the radio, and am underwhelmed by most podcasts, but a recent Gillmor Gang was pretty compelling: Steve calls in from the Integrated Media Association's New Media Summit with his special guest, Stephen Hill. The talk is all about the convergence of radio (most notably public radio) and "new media" if that term even makes sense any longer. |

XML Naming and Design Rules Specifications Published by OASIS, UN/CEFACT, and Navy CIO (Feb 01 2005 01:55 GMT) - Three closely aligned specifications governing XML naming and design rules have been approved for public release. The NDRs build upon the methodolgy and syntax-neutral object model specified in the Core Component Technical Specification (CCTS). The documents are aimed at optimizing semantic interoperability, modularity, extensibility, maintainability, and data element re-use through best-practice design of business components using W3C XML Schema constructs. |

Open-Source Streaming Translations in Porto Alegre (Feb 01 2005 01:55 GMT) - Roland Piquepaille writes "The World Social Forum (WSF) (choose your language on the site), which ends today in Porto Alegre, Brazil, has less money to spend on computing than the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos, Switzerland. But at both events, many different languages were spoken, meaning that simultaneous translations were an absolute necessity. If the WEF can afford professional translators and costly computers, in Porto Alegre, translators are volunteers, and the software to d... |

Terror powers expose 'tyranny' (Feb 01 2005 01:54 GMT) - But in the 66 years that I have been alive, there has not been one hour, of one day, of one month, of one year, when there has not been a threat aimed at us. My point is, the British have always coped without becoming a dictatorship. We have coped with fear without becoming a state based on fear; we have coped with threat without turning our country into a land of state threat. But that is what the Blair government now seeks to do - create a tyranny to defend us from the al-Qaeda tyranny. |
