Interesting data in the logs. ... (Feb 11 2005 23:39 GMT) - Interesting data in the logs. Over 14,000 hits came from one machine at Apple today, and the next two top clients were also from apple.com, leading me to wonder if they're working on some kind of search engine. This has been going on all week, so it's not just one day. |

Culture and Perspective (Feb 11 2005 23:38 GMT) - Steven Harrison writes: Recently, I walked through a store with one of my young children. I was distracted for a few moments by my purchase and my son became captivated by a television monitor in the corner broadcasting smarmy offers for products of one kind or another. He joined me after a few minutes and began repeating the jargon of the piped-in come-on, intrigued by the promise that he could join in the wonderful world that was promised by the toy, the movie, or the dirnk simply by buying something. My son had learned something. |

The Dangers of a Broken Heart (Feb 11 2005 23:38 GMT) - BBC Health -- Hearing shocking news, such as learning of the death of a loved one, really can break your heart, US researchers say. A team from Johns Hopkins University suggests patients can suffer days-long surges in adrenalin and other stress hormones which "stun" the heart. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, says such symptoms can be mistaken for a heart attack. But these broken hearts can be mended - the damage caused by stress is temporary, usually lasting just weeks. The researchers examined 19 patients who came into hospital with symptoms similar to those of a heart attack - chest pains, fluid in the lungs, shortness of breath and heart failure. |

Paxil Versus St. John's Wort (Feb 11 2005 23:38 GMT) - BBC Health -- A German study has added weight to the argument that a herbal remedy is an effective treatment for depression. Researchers compared the effectiveness of St John's wort to anti-depressant drug paroxetine in treating moderate and severe depression. The team found half of those with the condition improved when given the herb, compared with a third using the drug, the British Medical Journal reported. UK experts said the study of 244 people should be treated with caution. The study also found patients on paroxetine - also known as Paxil and Seroxat - suffered more side effects. |

Unlikely Ally (Feb 11 2005 23:38 GMT) - BBC Health -- The battle against dengue fever is being won in Vietnam thanks to a tiny water predator, experts say. Scientists, with the help of local children, have been placing the bug into water tanks where the mosquitoes which carry the disease breed. The scheme reduced the cases of dengue fever to zero in nine areas of north and central Vietnam over a five-year period, the Lancet said. The disease infects 50m people a year, killing 12,000. It is most commonly found in tropical areas of Africa, South America, the east Mediterranean, south east Asia and countries in the western Pacific. |

Endangered Bears (Feb 11 2005 23:38 GMT) - BBC Environment -- A pioneering study by Scottish experts has highlighted the dangers posed to polar bears from global warming. Scientists at St Andrews University have carried out what they believe to be the largest ever polar bear count in Arctic Europe. They believe 3,000 are living in the Barents Sea region, in contrast to earlier estimates of up to 5,000. A spokesman for the researchers said the risk from global warming puts bears in a "vulnerable position". The ground-breaking survey was carried out over five weeks and involved two helicopters and bears with satellite tags. |
