Sales of Tysabri (natalizumab), used to treat multiple sclerosis, were suspended on Monday after one patient died and a second became ill with a suspected case of nervous system disease that's frequently fatal. Scrushy defense portrays former HealthSouth CFO as head of fraud (Feb 28 2005 23:19 GMT) - By JAY REEVES The Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Lawyers for ousted HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy sought on Monday to portray a former HealthSouth finance chief — not Scrushy — as the head of a huge fraud at the rehabilitation chain. In cross-examination of former assistant controller Ken Livesay, defense attorney Art Leach brought out that former chief financial officer Bill Owens first came up with the idea of inflating HealthSouth's fixed-asset accounts as an audit loomed. "We had run out of ideas," said Livesay, among 15 former executives who have pleaded guilty. "We had a problem on the balance sheet of more than $400 million if we were going to make it through that audit. |

Editorial | Case Closed? Not So Fast (Feb 28 2005 23:19 GMT) - Philadelphia Inquirer Good thing Department of Justice lawyers got that torture business straightened out before Alberto R. Gonzales took over as attorney general this month. It could have been even more embarrassing than it is now, as Gonzales dances around the crying need for his department to investigate his own actions as White House counsel. In Gonzales, the nation has as its top law-enforcement officer someone who signed off on a range of outrageous interrogation tactics. |

Cheap tricks and dirty deeds. (Feb 28 2005 23:18 GMT) - I've been following a parliamentary debate all day. As a result I have a longish article that I can't seem to finish. It remains a rambling mess full of a hundred strands that I have not been able to weave together. Trying to keep up with even a tenth of this stuff is counter-productive to having any kind of life! Anyway I have posted every day this month, and don't want to miss the very last day. |
