Fixed my Maytag dryer (Mar 02 2005 23:54 GMT) - Our Maytag dryer started making some clanking noises. It turned out that one of the tumbling vanes was loose. I looked at the dryer and couldn't figure out how to disassemble the dryer. So, I tried to find the manual. Of course I couldn't find it. |

Media and Police Clash Over BTK (Mar 02 2005 23:54 GMT) - The Wichita Police Department and Chief Norman Williams are clashing with The Wichita Eagle over speculative -- and possibly inaccurate -- reporting. The local media in Wichita, Kan., have long been connected to the BTK murders. Now that a BTK suspect has been arrested, local law-enforcement officials are instead decrying the media. And the local paper is fighting back. |

Vitamin E: The Prostate Cancer Fighter (Mar 02 2005 23:53 GMT) - Two weeks ago, I posted the results of a recent study that showed how men with lower levels of vitamin D in their blood than those with higher amounts were twice as prone to develop an aggressive form of prostate cancer. According to a new report featured in this week's Journal of the National Cancer Institute, there's much more proof that further confirms vitamin E can be added to the list of weapons for preventing prostate cancer.Seems the risk of prostate cancer can be cut significantly when vitamin E's major components -- alpha- and gamma-tocopherol -- are present in high levels in the blood, according to an analysis of 100 patients with prostate cancer and 200 who were cancer-free, among 30,000 Finnish men. Those with the highest levels of alpha-tocopherol in their blood at baseline were 51 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer. Those who had the same high levels of gamma-tocopherol were 43 percent less likely to be stricken with the disease. |

Chiron Cleared To Make Vaccines Again (Mar 02 2005 23:53 GMT) - I posted a "warning shot" last month on my blog that Chiron was mounting a furious comeback in hopes of reopening its Liverpool manufacturing facility in the U.K. to begin producing vaccines for the American market.Looks like the comeback has begun in earnest today. Chiron passed the latest regulatory hurdle in returning to its place as the primary manufacturer of vaccines in America when the British government lifted the suspension of its license to make Fluvirin. |

Why Did Prilosec Disappear From Drug Stores? (Mar 02 2005 23:53 GMT) - An interesting story in today's New York Times, my all-time favorite newspaper in the world, tackles the super-hot demand for over-the-counter (OTC) Prilosec that's far outstripped consumer demand, leaving drug store shelves bare over the past few months. What's far more intriguing to me: How the FDA has "protected" Procter & Gamble and AstraZeneca from Prilosec after going to the OTC side.UK-based AstraZeneca claims domestic shortages over the past few months occurred as a result of poor projections of consumer demand by Procter & Gamble. But those bad numbers haven't hurt AstraZeneca at all. |

Scientists Recommend Fish Oil Requirement For Kids (Mar 02 2005 23:53 GMT) - Staying on the topic of fish oil, I found this interesting piece about a UK-funded research group called the Dyscovery Centre that recommends the British government provide cod liver oil (as well as orange juice) daily to kids at school to improve their diet and concentration. That recommendation was based on a survey of more than 1,100 school children that found 86 percent of them hadn't eaten fish any time during the previous day. And those who did usually ate fried fish or fish fingers. Other sad facts about their poor eating habits:About 25 percent of the children polled ate their dinners alone. |
