Double-Slit Experiment in Time, Not Space (Mar 02 2005 23:45 GMT) - [Slashdot] - TheMatt writes "Thomas Young's double-slit experiment is a classic experiment that helped establish the wave-like nature of light. Since then, it has been done with atoms, buckyballs, and biomolecules. It has even been seen in a single molecule, and the single electron version was voted the most beautiful experiment by Physics World readers (covered previously on Slashdot). Now, PhysicsWeb is reporting that Gerhard Paulus and coworkers have conducted the double-slit experiment using a double-slit in time, not space. |

Knock2ICQ, the new doorbell (Mar 02 2005 23:44 GMT) - I'd like to set a bit of background to this. I live in a digs in Grahamstown which used to be known as Mordor. Hang, it's still known as Mordor, but we're a very different group to previous years. The bits that I know of are some certifiable hippies a number of years ago, and a bunch of jocks in the more recent years. Now that some (mostly) geeks live here, some have suggested it be called Mordork (I'm not sure how that should be spelt, but you get the point, I'm sure). |

Search me (Mar 02 2005 23:44 GMT) - The search feature, which has been missing since august or something, when I managed to break it, has now been fixed. I thought it was about time, seeing as there is now enough stuff here for a search feature to actually be worthwhile. So, try it out. If you have any problems with it let me know. Should be fine though, fingers crossed. |

Roaming Profiles and Firefox's cache (Mar 02 2005 23:44 GMT) - In a Windows environment, roaming profiles are a good way of ensuring that your users data is being backed up (because it ends up on the server when they log off.) The user's profile is that directory at c:Documents and Settingsusername. Under this directory is a sub-directory called Local Settings. This directory is not synchronized with your roaming profile. |

Dalit Baum Brings Israeli Activism to Virginia (Mar 02 2005 23:43 GMT) - With stops in Blacksburg, Richmond, Smithfield, and Charlottesville that included a wide variety of meetings and people, the Virginia Anti-War Coalition's first state-wide tour featuring Dr. Dalit Baum was a resounding success. Dalit Baum brought a sense of humor and clarity to a number of topics - the Israel/Palestine conflict, the apartheid wall and the relationship between various types of oppression, just to name a few. Connecting issues was a prevalent theme throughout all of Dalit's appearances, such as when she spoke in Richmond about the group Black Laundry and how it ties gender, sexuality, and occupation issues together: "It actually wasn't so weird to connect these things, because we saw that people on the other side of the street in the counter-demonstrations were always connecting them - just like calling Women in Black 'whores'. |

Thoughts on the bizarre power of weblogs (Mar 02 2005 23:43 GMT) - Have emperors always gone about in their new birthday suits? Maybe contradictions are always inevitable between obvious realities and the official stories everybody reputable agrees to. Or maybe there's something about an expertised formally educated mass-media society, in which something can only become a fact or issue if the right people recognize it as such, that's very like an imperial court. However that may be, today we see around us, pushed on us by our instructors and leaders, Democracy in which the people rule as long as they make the right decisions. Free and unfettered debate as long as you don't say the wrong thing. |

Ticket to Hell #407 (Mar 02 2005 23:43 GMT) - I got to hang out with a group of old friends today and compare notes, which was both surreal and cool. I hadn't seen these people for years, and some of the stories came up were things I'd forgotten about. Headlight-tag was mentioned, which isn't worth going into that great... |

DRM-free MP3 Search Thingy Please (Mar 02 2005 23:42 GMT) - Here's another thing I want. It may exist and if it doesn't it should. It's a given that your DRM-encumbered music downloading sites are kinda crappy. Some are crappier than others, but they sorta suck. There do, however, exist numerous legal download sites, like emusic for example, that will sell you unencumbered mp3s that you can do whatever you like with, just like those CDs you can buy from Amazon that often end up cheaper than iTunes. |

Genesis: God’s word; Evolution: God’s work (Mar 02 2005 23:42 GMT) - "Herzfeld explained that how individuals imagine God, the imago Dei, is central to the image they attempt to imprint upon the autonomous machines they create, the imago hominis. "'The core of our nature is what we believe we share with God and what we want to share with our computers,' she said. "Using three theological models for understanding the relationship between humans and God, Herzfeld pointed out parallels in AI history." |
