- I would agree. Go with Knoppix, there is nothing you need to install, just burn the image to CD and away you go. Just be sure that the computer you want to use it with can boot from the CD. Also Knoppix is really handy when say your windows won't boot and you want access to your files, just boot Knoppix and you can access your windows partitions from Knoppix, plus delete those pesky virus/malware/spyware exe files without any warnings that 'the file may be in use' (Comment references www.luyckx.

The Myth of "It'll get better when..." (Mar 03 2005 03:58 GMT)

- I've been working, as I've made the time, on something called The Myth of the Intimate Planet. It's been an interesting effort thus far, and a little bit frustrating. I set out to try to persuade you of something I happen to believe, or more accurately, dissuade you of something others believe, and who seem to wish for you to do so as well. I've decided that's not what I want to do. Because I don't believe it is something I can do.

Ted Goranson (Mar 03 2005 03:58 GMT)

- Ted Goranson is a freakin' national asset! I don't know where he finds the time to locate and play with all this very cool software, most of which I'd never heard of before he wrote about it in his About This Particular Outliner column. This month's edition is another winner with several very cool apps I'd never even learn about without his column. Great guy.

-  USA Today story - " 'Black box' labels warning that antidepressants can increase suicidal behavior in children should be on the drugs most widely prescribed to kids by mid-March, five months after the Food and Drug Administration ordered them, according to FDA documents. 'It was really important for parents to have had this information. Getting it out quickly was important for transparency and trust.

I bought a car today (Mar 03 2005 03:55 GMT)

- I bought a car today but it wasn't for me - it was for an American. The Canadian and Ontario governments announced today that they will spend $500 million tax dollars to help build more cars in Canada largely for export to the USA. General Motors, the third largest company in America with $200 billion in annual revenue and several billion in profits, will get a $500 million incentive to expand their production. Liberals will argue that the resulting employment will result in more taxes being paid back to the government thereby making the investment worthwhile. Let's take a look at that logic shall we...

Electrical brain implants target deep depression (Mar 03 2005 03:55 GMT)

-  Toronto Globe and Mail story on a study to be published this week in the journal Neuron - "Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which shocks the entire brain with electricity to induce brain seizures as a treatment for severe depression, DBS is designed to electrically stimulate only the brain region known to be overactive in people with the condition. It is part of an expanding field known as "brain pacemakers," in which doctors implant devices that electrically alter neural circuits to treat disorders such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and even obsessive-compulsive behaviour. DBS is also less painful than ECT, with patients unable to feel the presence of the electrodes, or even whether they are turned on. As well, in stark contrast to other external, electrical therapies, the beneficial effects of DBS appear, so far, to be long lasting...
