People mangling Welsh... (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - Once in a while, when I feel like I know what I'm doing (or it's a special day like today - St. Davids Day, patron saint of Wales etc.), I'll occasionally dare to utter a sentence or two in Welsh instead of English when speaking to an appropriate person who would understand what I'm saying. And then I'll get th impression that I sound a tad pretentious, presumptious and silly. After all, if someone dropped a Chinese phrase into a mostly-English conversation, my head would jerk back and I'd be mildly annoyed or piqued. |

How to ruin a Oscars programme (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - Just get Sky to outbid the BBC for the rights to the Oscars, and then pretty much ignore the entire awards ceremony, in favour of: - constant plugs for the Scissor Sisters and Elton John - not coincidentally, Sky's pathetic presentation of the Oscars is brought to you from Elton John's party - The most exciting thing about the Oscars this year was that Chris Rock was presenting it. So what do Sky do? Cut down his witty bits to a three-minute opening prologue, and leave him out of the rest of the show. - have presenters who are far more obsessed by the parties and the costumes than the films and the awards - put Amanda Byron on the pink carpet for the party, and have her ask all the actors and actresses what they're wearing. |

The albums you should have listened to before you die (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - (Yet another bloody meme about compiling the greatest album list of all time. Although of course consuming music via albums is merely a commercial/technical hangover from the 1950s-1990s. We're all now getting to grips with an era of consumer choice when we can get just the song we want for 79p each - hell, I just showed one of my computerphobic but muso-obsessed friends the power of iTunes UK. There won't be a similar list circulating the galaxynet in 2047...) Anyway... |

Coming to America... (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - I am paying very serious attention to the idea of going to the United States between 11 and 24 March, mainly to get rid of all the leave I still have outstanding. I've already been quasi-invited to San Francisco and Sarasota to see some old friends (well, not that old) ... but if you're feeling bored during that time period and want to hook up / offer me your sofa to sleep on / go for wild nights on the town / offer me marriage (or anything really), then please please feel free to let me know :-) |

Stupid Star Trek fans (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - Never mind global warming, the war on Iraq, the rise of religious fundamentalism or the fact we'll all be under house arrest soon. UK Star Trek fans are planning to hold a rally to try and save Star Trek: Enterprise. Even though it's already been cancelled for good reasons. Even I stopped watching it (that theme tune really got on my nerves). |

What I hate about American journalism technique (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - One of the things drilled into me (not by choice) during my Louisiana State University journalism course was that for a feature story, an opening paragraph should ease you into the article in a warm cozy manner, emphasising the human interest angle. To me, that comes at the expense of the story itself - or "burying the lead" to use the American media parlance. This CNN.com story shows what I mean. (Spotted via Boing Boing) There's a huge 2,000-ton pile of cow manure in Nebraska that self-ignited and has been burning for three months now. |

Being tracked down by my blog (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - It was just another normal dull Sunday afternoon. I'd come back from Cantonese class, and was making a stab at the washing-up, when suddenly the doorbell rang. Outside the door was a long-time e-friend, who I shall name Arizona Gal. I was delighted to see her, and knew she was in the country, but obviously wasn't expecting to see her. Especially in Cardiff. |

It's not fair, damnit! (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - Thanks to the UK Weblogs Aggregator, I occasionally skim past the latest entry from Smoking Women Are Sexy, about the exploits of a "non-smoking teenager trying to get to grips with my (his) smoking fetish". He'd occasionally sneak pics of women smoking via his cameraphone, and upload them onto his blog - which of course leads to non-hilarious consequences when he gets caught, never mind the moral/ethical implications of what he was doing. Usually, I'd catch the latest entry, smirk snobbily at the boundary-less limits of human sexuality and fetishes thanks to the Internet, and move on. It's now the blog's first birthday and he's managed to do something that somehow doesn't work for me - he got a date with a smoking woman via the blog. She even let him light a cigarette. |

Getting groped... (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - During the occasionally-traditional Friday night drinks, I end up at the award-winning Toucan Club at their Welsh-language music evening, watching The Gogs doing their energetic head-moshing rock thing. And watching the crowd, because I've had way too much drink at this point (4 pints, probably) to do much but observe. At one point, a short girl with shockingly pick bouffant hair comes in. Which makes a huge change from the uniform of skinny dyed-blonde-hair girls with handbags and boys with short hair, shirts and trousers at the club. (Not that I'm any different of course). |

Designers' flame war, right here... (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - It'd be nice to think that in this new all-design millennial era, the archetypal pony-tailed square-spectacle-wearing ice-cool (blue, naturally) designers of the world would conduct their flamewars with a little more class. My mate has finally made it into the hallowed halls of the CSS Vault Gallery for his contribution to design. A tad minimalist, but it does the job and I'd probably rip off research his CSS code to find out how he does a few tricks. If I knew how. Amusingly, however, it wasn't long before his entry got encumbered with a flame war, and insults like "Rich you're a twat... |

Arthur Dent works for the BBC! (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - They've released the first proper trailer for The Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy. On first glance, it looks suitably insane, zany and downright weird with fantastic special effects. It's going to be a good month for British sci-fi fans, what with this and Doctor Who later this month. Anyway, watch the trailer (legally via Amazon or a dodgy Quicktime version, and in the shot with the alarm clock, you'll see a BBC pass lying on the table. Nice touch! |

Picasa - Flickr for your desktop? (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - Being a total Flickr fan (so much so I might even pay for a year's subscription soon!), one of the great things about it is the way you can tag photographs to designate them a certain category, in much the same way that you can do that with Gmail. Naturally, you can also give photographs multiple tags. I've just downloaded Picasa, a new bit of photo management software. It's got lots of pretty features, but the main reason I'll use it as opposed to my existing "throw the pics into a specific folder in Windows and hope my memory copes" method is precisely the ability to multipally tag pictures. |

Assault on Precinct 13 - did I see the same film as everyone else? (Mar 03 2005 14:53 GMT) - Once in a blue moon, I'll go and see a film without having read any reviews. I went to see Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), hoping for an action film that was slightly above the norm. Nope, it was absolutely average in every way, shape and respect. The main character had to have some extra motivation, the main enemy would be likeable, and it followed the three-act structure to the letter (just like Speed, in fact). None of the so-called action sequences were exciting and was just dull, dull, dull. |

aide : Suggestion: sauvegarde PDF.

StartupJournal | Enterprise (Mar 03 2005 14:52 GMT) - StartupJournal | EnterpriseBy RIVA RICHMONDFrom Dow Jones NewswiresWhen GreenCine Inc. launched an online journal two years ago, the San Francisco online DVD-rental company hoped that a steady diet of film reviews, festival dispatches and filmmaker interviews would energize its community of cinephiles, turn regulars onto new movies and attract more members. It worked. The company's blog, GreenCine Daily, sparked a 20-fold rise in hits on the GreenCine Web site to about one million a month. Even better, films critiqued by the blog's two writers are often snapped up by renters. |
