Note From Chile (Mar 04 2005 14:05 GMT) - Daniel Alarcon, whose War By Candlelight comes out soon, has been sending notes to friends from South America, and Eyeshot's got them: It’s true that I’ve never been to Brazil, where samba surely acts as a vaccine against hunger, and if you’re Colombian and can claim both Garcia Marquez and Shakira, why would you be unhappy, etc., but really, Chile is just something else. I talked to a lot of people while I was there: economists, aquaculturists, farm workers, writers, waiters, subsistence drug dealers, actors, bus drivers, military recruits, journalists, small business owners – and everyone seemed to share this optimism: |

Corante.com: The PHP-Mainframe Revolution (Mar 04 2005 14:05 GMT) - Dana Blankenhorn has added a new dimension to the IBM-Zend partnership with a new post on his blog that reads, "Zend Core is based on Cloudscape. That's the name of the server IBM has created for its old DB2 database format. Thus, IBM's old mainframe tools are entering the computing mainstream through open source. With Linux IBM has one tool that will combine all its old mainframe, minicomputer, PC, client, and server stuff into one environment, so the wisdom of 50 years need not be lost." He also points to IBM's technical roadmap that will lead to an open source Zend Core in the second half of the year. |

Frames (Mar 04 2005 14:04 GMT) - We have a couple of sites with frames and they have proved incredibly useful with Flash menu systems which control the other frames' content. Leaving a nice Flash menu in position means you dont have to load it again on the next page, and the animated history of what users do in Flash is harder to monitor between pages, so keeping one Flash menu system for the user is preferable. My question about frames is "What code do the individual frames need?" Do they need a </html> |

family freaking values (Mar 04 2005 14:03 GMT) - Jay Leno, who is being called as a witness in the Michael Jackson trial, has asked the judge to exempt him from the gag order placed a year ago on people involved in the trial because, his lawyer says, surely the judge did not intend to keep America from hearing vitally important emotionally-disturbed pop star accused of pedophilia jokes America presumably wants to hear those jokes, because four hundred thousand of them tuned in to E! to watch their recreation of the trial on its first night, complete with guy in too much eye liner impersonating the defendant. This is why we don't watch TV.I'm glad Johnny Carson didn't see this. |

Colorado Water HB 1177 is ... (Mar 04 2005 14:03 GMT) - Colorado Water HB 1177 is the subject of this article from the Cortez Journal. They write, "Penry's bill creates a 27-member interbasin compact committee that will include experts in environmental, municipal, agricultural, industrial and recreation to decide how to handle interbasin compact negotiations. It also creates a round-table in each of the seven water divisions, along with round-tables for the metropolitan areas of the South Platte and Arkansas river basins to provide forums. The model for the Colorado plan is the Colorado River Compact, which divvies up water from the river between Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico, and to so-called lower basin states, California, Nevada and Arizona. With populations growing and the drought sticking around for a fifth year in some places, the government has been encouraging states and everyone else to conserve and cooperate. |
