Stem Cell Research In Brazil (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - The Kansas City Star reports on the legalization of embryonic stem cell research in Brazil: "As Brazilians in wheelchairs cheered, legislators voted to legalize stem cell research using human embryos - offering hope of one day finding treatments for ailments such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injuries. ... The bill now goes to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is expected to sign it into law." You may recall that adult stem cell therapies for heart disease were trialed in Brazil while the FDA blocked any such work in the US. |

In Response to Clowns Like Reps. Pombo and Gibbons... (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - Alternative Hippo suggests we start throwing names around, just as the right-wingers are wont to do. If one of "them" calls you a "treehugger," AH suggests "eco-drama queen" as an appropriate response. He defines an "eco-drama queen" as "A man or woman who embodies the environmental sensitivity of a train wreck in motion constantly seeking its next victim." Personally, I'm tickled by the idea |

Orwell on the Environment,... (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - Or, how to make intiatives that create more pollution sound environmentally friendly. From GreenMedia.info, an article (source unclear) on how the Bush administration is much more interested in creating doublespeak than actually cleaning up the environment. Not news to sustainablog readers, of course, but this article provides some really interesting details and observations... Technorati |

White Biotechnology... (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - Is the growing experimental trend that aims to "[harness] nature's tools, like bacteria, for industrial production." Bob at Howling has posted an article outlining some of the more interesting developments in the field, including an Irish experiment that attempts to use pseudomonas (a class of bacteria) to convert styrene into biodegradeable plastics. Speaking of Style... (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - The ever-green and stylish Treehugger briefly features the Organic Wine Company today. I've been to the OWC site a number of times, and while I've never ordered, I am impressed with their selections. Anyone have any reviews of any of these wines (in appropriately snobby wine-review language, of course)? Technorati tags: organic, wine |

Clothes Do Make the Activist (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - A "Carson Kressley-style bitch slap" to the prototypical Birkenstock and tie-dye environmentalist crowd from Lou Bendrick at Grist. A fun piece, but I agree that we have to consider image. Now, I don't think than means we should all go button-down, but much of the image of the "environmentalist" has become hopelessly cliche'. Unfortunately, many of us are ready and willing to embrace that |

Reverse Biomimicry (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - Fascinating post from WorldChanging on a Canadian experiment to apply: models for the propagation of computer viruses across the Internet to the spread of the spiny water flea in Canadian lakes, an invasive species. The network model provided new insights into both how the flea moves from lake to lake and how it could be controlled. Jamais floats the term "technomimicry" for this phenomenon... |

"The Truth is First to Die..." (Mar 04 2005 19:58 GMT) - OK, that's an obscure reference that only outs me as an 80s hard rock fan -- it's from Great White's "The Big Goodbye..."
