etolane : Unable to stay, unwilling to leave. |

Breaking up is hard to do (Mar 04 2005 19:33 GMT) - Well not really. Today I gave notice and accepted a job with Mitre doing Some Really Cool Stuff, with Some Very Esteemed People. I never thought that I would have the chance to integrate my academic interests with my day job, but that day has come. The two biggest carrots they dangled in front of me was the oppurtunity to get a work project to double as my MS thesis, and an offer of support in earning my phd (if... |

Web site helps break hearts (Mar 04 2005 19:33 GMT) - AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- The delicate problem of how to dump a loved one before moving on to the next has been given a new twist by a Dutch Web site. The site suggests women tell their partner they want a baby and men buy their girlfriend underwear that's too big. But instead of just helping people give lovers the elbow, the site sells holidays -- working on the assumption that people want to go away for a fling without the shackles of a loved one at home, Dutch communications company Young Works said. Some 180,000 people have visited http://www. |

Axworthy on the Missile Shield (Mar 04 2005 19:32 GMT) - Earlier in the week this site was host to some rigorous but civil debate about Canada's participation in US missile defence program. Via Boing Boing again, former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Lloyd Axworthy has written a snarky letter to Condoleezza Rice with his opinion:As our erstwhile Prairie-born and bred (and therefore prudent) finance minister pointed out in presenting his recent budget, we've had eight years of balanced or surplus financial accounts. If we're going to spend money, Mr. Goodale added, it will be on day-care and health programs, and even on more foreign aid and improved defence. |

Posting of Board Standards needed!! (Mar 04 2005 19:32 GMT) - Richard, Would it be possible for a short explanation of the rules of the boards - what behavior is and is not acceptable - to be posted at the top of every board? Perhaps as a permanent post? A lot of good people (Ian being the prime example) are leaving because of a perceived bias for or against certain posters. My thought is that a minimal standard, publicly posted and strictly enforced, would negate any suggestion of the rules being arbitratry and might draw back some of the quality posters over time. Just as some suggestions of minimal guidelines: |
