Texas Trying to Kill Free WiFi (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - The great thing about Austin and SxSW is its free WiFi. Well those smart politicians are starting to think it's best to get rid of it. Chad writes: Phil King, R-Weatherford, has filed a massive telecommunications bill in Austin this session that, in part, bans Texas cities from participating in wireless information networks. The article claims the large telecommunications companies like SBC have nothing to do with the bill but I have my doubts. |

Weather (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - This weekend is going to be lovely warm weather, perfect for grilling and other outdoor activities.Too bad I'll be locked to the computer, correcting typos and getting the formatting right for The Cauldron Crack'd.We joined a food coop locally to get to know local producers better. And to be able to buy their produce in smaller quantities than we'll need for the Cracked Cauldron. I've ordered |

It's Been a While (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - And during this blog-hiatus, we've written The Cauldron Crack'd, a cookbook focusing on Renaissance Faire Foods, RenFaire anecdotes, and a few historical recipes, too. It's not by any means a scholarly piece, just ignore the pendantic prose and the excerpts from medieval texts. That's to appease the Authenticity Mavens who will be at the OU Medieval Faire, hovering over our shoulders and |

De-Vere 504DS Enlarger Review (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - "What Odyssey has done is replace the negative stage of an analogue enlarger with a sophisticated digital imaging system that uses a high-resolution Liquid Crystal Display to simulate a conventional negative. The enlarger’s computer systems convert digital files into “virtual” negatives that appear on the 504DS panel through which light can be projected. When the panel is active and the enlarger’s shutter is opened, the enlarger projects the file onto the base board in the same way a film enlarger projects a negative. This can be focused, sized, and cropped in the same way as a conventional enlarger. Contrast is controlled, both in Photoshop and on the en larger, using dichroic filters. |

neige-eternelle : besoin de ça. (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - je vais bientôt partir me coucher. |

I can't eat, I can't sleep any more... (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - But alas, I'm not in love - which is probably a good thing since I can't swallow either. (Warning: this is the mandatory bloggers' "I'm feeling so ill, sooo ill" type-post. Feel free to ignore.) |

You're not Welsh unless you have a red rugby top (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - In Swansea, a city not exactly renown for good race relations, a Bangladeshi baby was refused a free St David's photo on the grounds it was wearing a yellow daffodil, and not a red Welsh rugby top. The council's response is priceless in its sneering attitude, and inability to understand just what the problem is - "The decision she made is a matter for her." If you're offering free photos for kids on St. Davids Day, then surely having a daffodil is just as justifiable (and a damn site cheaper) as a red Welsh rugby top? I really can't see the problem the council would have had in taking one more picture of a baby wearing a daffodil instead of a rugby top. |

Squirming at teen movies (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - One time, my flatmate put on a Swedish teenage lesbian melodrama, which was utterly predictable - and also totally emotionally squirmy. So much so, that I had to leave the room. There was no "hot" lesbian action in the film - just two teenagers from different sides of the popularity tracks slowly fumbling towards their feelings for each other. But for some reason, the sheer emotional nudity on show - plus all that mawkish teenage sentiment really had me on edge. It's been the same with pretty much all films with teenagers in a high school - even the comedies. |

Car calamities (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - I don't know why I bothered owning a car. I just don't. I had to renew my car tax. Which unfortunately involves presenting your car insurance and MOT (car roadworthiness) documents. This sorry saga starts when I realise that despite diligent paperwork filing procedures (it all goes in a huge pile), I had lost said documents. |

People mangling Welsh... (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - Once in a while, when I feel like I know what I'm doing (or it's a special day like today - St. Davids Day, patron saint of Wales etc.), I'll occasionally dare to utter a sentence or two in Welsh instead of English when speaking to an appropriate person who would understand what I'm saying. And then I'll get th impression that I sound a tad pretentious, presumptious and silly. After all, if someone dropped a Chinese phrase into a mostly-English conversation, my head would jerk back and I'd be mildly annoyed or piqued. |

How to ruin a Oscars programme (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - Just get Sky to outbid the BBC for the rights to the Oscars, and then pretty much ignore the entire awards ceremony, in favour of: - constant plugs for the Scissor Sisters and Elton John - not coincidentally, Sky's pathetic presentation of the Oscars is brought to you from Elton John's party - The most exciting thing about the Oscars this year was that Chris Rock was presenting it. So what do Sky do? Cut down his witty bits to a three-minute opening prologue, and leave him out of the rest of the show. - have presenters who are far more obsessed by the parties and the costumes than the films and the awards - put Amanda Byron on the pink carpet for the party, and have her ask all the actors and actresses what they're wearing. |

The albums you should have listened to before you die (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - (Yet another bloody meme about compiling the greatest album list of all time. Although of course consuming music via albums is merely a commercial/technical hangover from the 1950s-1990s. We're all now getting to grips with an era of consumer choice when we can get just the song we want for 79p each - hell, I just showed one of my computerphobic but muso-obsessed friends the power of iTunes UK. There won't be a similar list circulating the galaxynet in 2047...) Anyway... |

Coming to America... (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - I am paying very serious attention to the idea of going to the United States between 11 and 24 March, mainly to get rid of all the leave I still have outstanding. I've already been quasi-invited to San Francisco and Sarasota to see some old friends (well, not that old) ... but if you're feeling bored during that time period and want to hook up / offer me your sofa to sleep on / go for wild nights on the town / offer me marriage (or anything really), then please please feel free to let me know :-) |

Stupid Star Trek fans (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - Never mind global warming, the war on Iraq, the rise of religious fundamentalism or the fact we'll all be under house arrest soon. UK Star Trek fans are planning to hold a rally to try and save Star Trek: Enterprise. Even though it's already been cancelled for good reasons. Even I stopped watching it (that theme tune really got on my nerves). |

What I hate about American journalism technique (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - One of the things drilled into me (not by choice) during my Louisiana State University journalism course was that for a feature story, an opening paragraph should ease you into the article in a warm cozy manner, emphasising the human interest angle. To me, that comes at the expense of the story itself - or "burying the lead" to use the American media parlance. This CNN.com story shows what I mean. (Spotted via Boing Boing) There's a huge 2,000-ton pile of cow manure in Nebraska that self-ignited and has been burning for three months now. |

Being tracked down by my blog (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - It was just another normal dull Sunday afternoon. I'd come back from Cantonese class, and was making a stab at the washing-up, when suddenly the doorbell rang. Outside the door was a long-time e-friend, who I shall name Arizona Gal. I was delighted to see her, and knew she was in the country, but obviously wasn't expecting to see her. Especially in Cardiff. |

It's not fair, damnit! (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - Thanks to the UK Weblogs Aggregator, I occasionally skim past the latest entry from Smoking Women Are Sexy, about the exploits of a "non-smoking teenager trying to get to grips with my (his) smoking fetish". He'd occasionally sneak pics of women smoking via his cameraphone, and upload them onto his blog - which of course leads to non-hilarious consequences when he gets caught, never mind the moral/ethical implications of what he was doing. Usually, I'd catch the latest entry, smirk snobbily at the boundary-less limits of human sexuality and fetishes thanks to the Internet, and move on. It's now the blog's first birthday and he's managed to do something that somehow doesn't work for me - he got a date with a smoking woman via the blog. She even let him light a cigarette. |

Getting groped... (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - During the occasionally-traditional Friday night drinks, I end up at the award-winning Toucan Club at their Welsh-language music evening, watching The Gogs doing their energetic head-moshing rock thing. And watching the crowd, because I've had way too much drink at this point (4 pints, probably) to do much but observe. At one point, a short girl with shockingly pick bouffant hair comes in. Which makes a huge change from the uniform of skinny dyed-blonde-hair girls with handbags and boys with short hair, shirts and trousers at the club. (Not that I'm any different of course). |

Designers' flame war, right here... (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - It'd be nice to think that in this new all-design millennial era, the archetypal pony-tailed square-spectacle-wearing ice-cool (blue, naturally) designers of the world would conduct their flamewars with a little more class. My mate has finally made it into the hallowed halls of the CSS Vault Gallery for his contribution to design. A tad minimalist, but it does the job and I'd probably rip off research his CSS code to find out how he does a few tricks. If I knew how. Amusingly, however, it wasn't long before his entry got encumbered with a flame war, and insults like "Rich you're a twat... |

Arthur Dent works for the BBC! (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - They've released the first proper trailer for The Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy. On first glance, it looks suitably insane, zany and downright weird with fantastic special effects. It's going to be a good month for British sci-fi fans, what with this and Doctor Who later this month. Anyway, watch the trailer (legally via Amazon or a dodgy Quicktime version, and in the shot with the alarm clock, you'll see a BBC pass lying on the table. Nice touch! |

An an Accumulation of Random Facts and Paragraphs From The Blog People on Michael Gorman (Mar 04 2005 22:59 GMT) - At the risk of beating an old dead horse here's just one last post on Gormangate. It's a conglomerate of Gormangate posts from the blog people. I've been busy trying to finish editing an edition of The Reference Librarian, so I've been behind in my blogosphere reading. Today I finally found some time to read the unpublishable blog people's subculture. I used a notoriously inefficient search engine to retrieve heaps of irrelevant rubbish in nanoseconds to see just what the blog people think (or their subclass who are interested in computers and the glorification of information). |
