Long Island library does the shuffle ... (Mar 04 2005 23:59 GMT) - Jeanie Straub writes "Wired News reports that South Huntington Public Library on Long Island, New York, has become one of the first public libraries to offer iPod shuffles. 'It's changed the books on tape from a car-only experience to a bring-it-with-you experience,' one library user commented. How can anyone argue that libraries are irrelevant?" |

An Evening with Farah Mendlesohn (Mar 04 2005 23:58 GMT) - Farah Mendlesohn, editor of one of the top SF academic journals, Foundation, and lecturer in American History at Middlesex University, came to the Merrill collection last night for a conversation with the Merril's senior librarian. It was a lovely evening. Lorna's questions were good ones, and Farah's extensive answers were even better. We learned a great deal about the strange state of SF written for children (and lack thereof), how small the world of SF academia is, and how overdone articles on Ursula LeGuin are.Afterwards, a dozen of us trooped out to a nearby pub to continue talking after the library had closed. |

Patch bug fixed (Mar 04 2005 23:56 GMT) - The development builds of BottomFeeder have had a problem getting updates - the downloads have been failing. I took a look at this just now, and realized that I was being hit by a change in the HTTP client libraries in VW 7.3. The files are being downloaded without any encoding information, so they default to iso8859. The trouble is, that's not what this data is - it's binary. |
