Canadians may get ill in spite of flu shot (Mar 05 2005 21:59 GMT) - For the second year in a row, the flu vaccines used in Canada don't match the current strains of the virus, reducing the vaccine's usefulness ("Flu shots miss new strain"). As discussed previously (see blog entry Flu shots), flu vaccines are formulated to work against specific strains, but the strains change, so we're always one or more steps behind in the fight. Another solution is to build up the body's resistance to the flu in general, rather than to specific strains. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, many illnesses can be prevented by eating the proper foods. Mint, basil and leafy green vegetables can help guard against the flu. |

Green tea and health (Mar 05 2005 21:59 GMT) - In recent years, green tea has been the subject of much research and has been found to be effective for a variety of illnesses (see, for instance, "Green tea 'may protect the heart'", "Green tea 'can block cancer'" and "Green tea could cut arthritis risk"). According to the Law of 5 elements, green tea belongs to the Wood element. It is also bitter and cooling. Green tea helps the heart, because the heart belongs to the Fire element, which is associated with bitter flavour. Green tea is useful for treating cancer and rheumatoid arthritis because both these diseases are caused by an excess of the Earth element, which is reduced by the Wood element. |

THE HOME-MADE STOVE ARCHIVES (Mar 05 2005 21:58 GMT) - This no-frames, no frills website is dedicated to those brave experimenters spending time in building their own backpacking stoves or modifying commercial made ones. When I did my searches on this topic it turned out to be a very difficult task to find out about models quoted in discussions groups and web boards. URLs are not always mentioned, links show tendencies to expire and change. Thus: The Archives. |
