One cannot live in the cradle forever (Mar 10 2005 14:59 GMT)

- This NASA PSA works on so many levels I hardly know where to begin. It does not at any point say "only socialist space programs can get us there". You could infer that if you saw it in certain contexts, but then again, if you saw it at a space entrepreneurs get together you would not. The underlying message is a good one and I thoroughly applaud it. We will reach for the stars.

Here is a recent announcement of the Mars extensions to the X-Plane product: Trans-global flight on the planet Mars is now available to X-Plane pilots. If you don't have the Mars Data CD set....

Art for the 21st century (Mar 10 2005 14:59 GMT)

- Jim Plaxco of the National Space Society tried some creative processing of Mars image data with artistic rather than scientific goals in mind. Some of the results are quite to my taste; others are more for lovers of the abstract. I cannot help but imagine art such as this in the lobby of some Martian corporate headquarters or perhaps in the Marsport Bigelow reception area. Jim has a website for his artistic renderings.

Who owns sporting titles, and what are they worth? (Mar 10 2005 14:59 GMT)

- While many aspects of intellectual property rights are clearly defined legally by such devices as patents and trademarks, the situation is not quite so clear with other things that may be defined as intellectual property. Take titles of merit, such as 'World Champion'. In team sports, this is not really an issue. For team disciplines can only take place in a regulated environment. For example, in football, the question of which is the strongest club...

E-Kai's Wireless USB Headphones (Mar 10 2005 14:59 GMT)

- I'm beginning to think I should invest in a pair of USB wireless headphones, and this setup from E-Kai will hopefully bring new competition to the market. Coming in at only 5,980 yen (like 60 clams), E-Kai's system is comprised of a base station that connects to your PC via USB which in turn sends signals to the headphones via infrared (therefore avoiding interference from wireless LANs). While this is not exactly revolutionary in of itself, it's good to see this market is still developing. USB wireless headphones and speakers from E-Kai [TechJapan]

As Sony wobbles, Samsung rises (Mar 10 2005 14:58 GMT)

- Korean electronics firm has become the 'factory of ideas'. TOKYO In 1997, the year Howard Stringer joined Sony, Japan's premium electronics company took little notice of Samsung Electronics, a South Korean television maker fighting a life or death battle to survive the Asian currency crisis. Less than a decade later, Samsung has twice the market capitalization of Sony, which this week named Stringer as its new chairman.

Why won't GM sell off their EVs? (Mar 10 2005 14:58 GMT)

- Maybe some attorney out there can explain this:Soggy southern California dried out enough on Saturday, February 26th for nearly 100 "vigiler" to rally in support of "freeing" the last 77 EV1 electric cars thought to be remaining in the state. They gathered in front of General Motors' Burbank training center, behind which are parked dozens of red, black, and silver highway-capable, battery-powered cars. Using a solar-powered public address system and led by actress and environmentalist Alexandra Paul, organizers asked GM to sell them the cars for their estimated residual value of $25,000. Holding up a large art board check for $1.
