An Intimidating Audience (Mar 10 2005 20:59 GMT) - Saturday, I gave a short talk at the National Art Education Association conference. I wanted to explore some of the implications of Pam Taylor's research in using Tinderbox and Storyspace in the art classroom. In particular, we've got fairly good methods for deciding whether a feature makes software a few percent better or worse, but no good method for knowing whether the software sometimes makes a huge, life-changing difference to its users. The scary part? Putting together the visuals, knowing that they're going to be shown to a room full of art professionals -- professionals on holiday who (I imagine) must see plenty of earnest, clumsy student stuff every day. |

Michael Ruhlman (Mar 10 2005 20:59 GMT) - When you talk about books on your weblog, sometimes you get a chance to talk to the people who wrote them. Charming email this morning from Michael Ruhlman, who wrote Making of A Chef (blog post here). |

Less Accurate Search Results? (Mar 10 2005 20:58 GMT) - I haven't noticed in change, but more often then not, use an exact match (quotes) to narrow my results. Can you give some specific examples of where the "exact" match was not exactly matching (e.g. you were searching for 'fart', but instead got 'art' - or perhaps even vice versa :? )? |

Vonage - Caller ID Software? (Mar 10 2005 20:58 GMT) - That doesn't answer the question he had though and I have the same question. We want to use the network that it's already hooked into without having to run extra lines or get/use extra hardware. |

Human rights in India, Pakistan (Mar 10 2005 20:57 GMT) - I have received two annual reports on the state of human rights. One is by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on India and the other by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan on its own country. The difference between the two is that ours has an official stamp in the sense that the funding comes from the exchequer. Pakistan's is run by voluntary organisations. |

Groove/Microsoft Q&A (Mar 10 2005 20:57 GMT) - Well, another week, another interesting deal to discuss. Two weeks ago it was IBM partnering with Zend, this week it's Microsoft snapping up Groove. The deal has any number of interesting angles to it: P2P and Microsoft, Ray Ozzie as Microsoft CTO, proliferation of Office assets - so I can't go into detail on all of them. But I'll try the same format from the IBM/Zend post mostly because it's quickest. |
