In Paradisum (Apr 10 2005 01:57 GMT) - On Friday, April 8, 2005, the funeral for Pope John Paul II was held in Vatican City. It was a major event attended by kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers, numerous other high-ranking government and religious officials, as well as hundreds of thousands of common people. Interestingly, however, despite the added security and the attendance by the rich and powerful and privileged, the funeral service itself was quite a simple event, a Roman Catholic funeral Mass very much like any Catholic Christian would receive. I am always deeply touched by the singing of the traditional Latin hymn, "In Paradisum," at the closure of the service. This lovely old hymn is a standard part of the Order of Christian Funerals and it's strangely comforting; |
