Who is watching who? (Apr 14 2005 23:59 GMT) - "In an attempt to establish equity in the world of surveillance, participants at the Computers,Freedom and Privacy conference in Seattle this week took to the streets to ferret out surveillance cameras and turn the tables on offensive eyes taking their picture,"Wired News reports."Following wearable computing guru Steve Mann into a downtown Seattle shopping mall, about two dozen conference attendees, some of them armed with handheld cameras, snapped photos of smoked-glass ceiling domes in Nordstrom and Gap stores, which may or may not have contained cameras". Negative or Paradoxical Strategies (Apr 14 2005 23:59 GMT) - Antony Judge writes a paper about Liberating Provocations. You know, the "rational" approach, if you want somebody to do something that is good for them, has usually been considered to be to positively promote constructive behavior. I.e. tell them why it is good for them, outline all the advantages, provide useful information, encourage them. |

He's in trouble if they transfer him to the Bronx (Apr 14 2005 23:59 GMT) - Considering the Nazi-like smoking laws of NYC, this poor chimp would be in trouble if he got sent to the Big Apple. Of course, if he could hit a curveball, Steinbrenner would make the trade and maybe throw in Mariano Rivera. After my cat hunting trip to Wisconsin, I may have to make a short jaunt to South Africa to share the joys of a good cigar with Charlie the Chimp. Courtesy of Mango - who |

Another petty rant (Apr 14 2005 23:59 GMT) - I was going to title this one 'Blow me,' but it's actually the opposite. Attention neighbors with leaf blowers and landscaping people. I know your one mission in life is to move that leaf, piece of debris, dirt, or rock away from your yard, the curb, but my yard, my vehicle, or me if I'm walking by is not an appropriate resting facility. If you blow it in my yard, I'm going to make sure it winds |

Pet(ty) Rant for the Day (Apr 14 2005 23:59 GMT) - No more air travel for me. Unless someone on the other end has a decent lighter for my cigars. The TSA in its infinite wisdom has banned all lighters on planes - even those checked in baggage (which is what I used to do with my Colibri). Apparently, I can take matches along (most likely since they have a difficult time detecting them - as they did with the explosives in Richard Reid's shoe that |

Panther Or Tiger For iMac G3 (Apr 14 2005 23:59 GMT) - Anonymous Coward writes "Although Apple says 10.4 will work on my iMac DV SE (400 Mhz G3, slot loading, Firewire), does it make sense to run 10.4 on it? I don't think that any of the goodies that need Quartz Extreme will work -- I've only got 8MB of VRAM. Also, I remember the problems that 10. |

Sit 'n' Spin - Star Wars Geek Line Standoff QTVR (Apr 14 2005 23:58 GMT) - Screen-cap of Robert Fisher's Geek QTVRAh, here's the sweet spot: The convergence of three things I wanted to post about - a local QTVR artist, a killer repository of QTVR worldwide, and the Star Wars line-squatters. The subject: Check out this slick cubic Quicktime VR of the Star Wars fans basting in the sun just across the parking lot from the Chinese, where Revenge of the Sith is NOT scheduled to open.
