What is configd and why is it running on my Mac? (Apr 25 2005 18:59 GMT) - Filed under: OS The Unix underpinnings of OS X deliver unto us Mac users many good things. We have protected memory, great multitasking, lots of open source software, and heaps of security. / /But, as the sages of the 'Facts of Life' have taught us, you have to take good with the bad. Thanks to Unix being designed by geeks who were more interested |

Walk About (Apr 25 2005 18:59 GMT) - Just gave a co-worker a bit of money for her Walk for Autism Research fundraiser. She pulled the envelope of cash and checks out as I wrote my info down on her collection sheet and joked, ?Well, now you know where all the money is!? So I told her that I couldn?t think of a worse thing to do than steal the money for autism research. |

Google's Future Products (Apr 25 2005 18:59 GMT) - Now one knows exactly what Google is working on but experts speculate that Google is secretly building software for a browser, communication tools and an operating system. A great new article in the Globe and Mail speculates that Google may be working on net communication software tool. First of all, Google has been noted to be purchasing large quantities of 'dark' fibre-optic capacity, on the cheap (much excess capacity was laid during those heady days of irrational exuberance) to increase its proprietary network bandwidth. To what end? Some of the most far-out rumours say that Google is developing a Skype-esque software that will allow high-quality voice communications over the Internet, costing virtually nothing to the consumer. |

Here comes the sun. (Apr 25 2005 18:59 GMT) - After the shitastic weekend the weather has flip-flopped back to Spring and it is about 60 degrees out and sunny. This of course took care of all of the snow and ice that appeared over the weekend. Hopefully the plants haven't suffered since the hostas are all going and practically everthing else is sprouting. Cleveberg, 180 miles to the north on Lake Erie got hit with something like 12 inches of snow this weekend. Detroit got hit too. |

Television Not So Dumb As Television Tells Us To Think It Is (Apr 25 2005 18:59 GMT) - This article explores a trend I had noticed lately, but had not noticed how pervasive it is. Much prime time television has become phenomenally complicated, to its great benefit. My wife and I both enjoy Alias and CSI (only the original, not the spinoffs), and we are frequently asking each other what something means, because if you so much as get up to get a drink, you'll miss something, something that might change the course of the entire episode. I can also say this is not confined to television; I don't read enough books in general to know whether this is happening across all genres, but a Hugo winning science fiction story of today is likely to be significantly more complicated structurally than a Hugo winner of the 1960s. |

Me Shop Pretty One Day (Apr 25 2005 18:59 GMT) - Reveries reports on a new study from the Nielsen Norman Group that basically says teens aren't super Web savvy geniuses. In fact, the study claims "teenagers (13-17) can complete 'perfectly feasible' tasks on a web site only 55 percent of the time." What does this mean for Web designers of E-commerce sites? Jakob [Nielsen's] advice is to consider first the "traits of the average teen -- lack of patience, short attention span, image consciousness and a lack of literary sophistication." He advises: |

URGENT 24 UPDATE (Apr 25 2005 18:58 GMT) - No wonder Marwan is such an evil terrorist. He's also the Mummy.
