Mental-health agenda wins significant gains (Washington) (Apr 29 2005 18:59 GMT) - Seattle Times story - "Advocates began spring worried budgets for state mental-health programs would be slashed by $82 million due to federal Medicaid cuts, but this week they are celebrating big gains. Not only were the cuts replaced during the state legislative session that ended Sunday, but $18 million in new money was granted to bolster addiction treatment. Mental-health advocates also won long-sought 'parity' for insurance coverage. It adds up to what some describe as the most significant legislative session for mental health in more than a decade... |

Game-like VR Program Helps 9/11 Trauma Victims (Apr 29 2005 18:59 GMT) - Given that there's so much discussion about gaming its value within the LIS community, this seems like a pertinent article (from CNN). At the Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Studies Program at Weill Cornell Medical College, World Trade Center survivors are working through their trauma and memories with a virutal reality program that looks much like a video game interface. "The idea behind the treatment is to systematically expose the patient to aspects of their experience in a graded fashion so they can confront their fear of the trauma," she told CNN. [snip] The treatment gives patients the ability to reconnect with their memories of that day, an important step for the healing process, Difede said. |

Jerome James (Apr 29 2005 18:58 GMT) - Over at SupersonicSoul, the theory is that James has been drinking some Crunk Juice. Anyone else have any theories? Anyone think he'll be a Przybilla-style player next year? (Perhaps without all the blocks) Is he a good sleeper candidate? Or will he be overvalued next season because of his playoff performance? |

Combatting the White Peril (Apr 29 2005 18:57 GMT) - ...first we learned last week that the Governator was calling for the closing of America's borders (my instant response was "too late, Arnold, you already got in"), rapidly followed the next day by a retraction that was blamed on those darned "English as a second language" problems that he constantly combats. In itself, this should give pause to those who are leading the charge to amend the Constitution to allow Arnold to run for President; were his mental Austrian/English dictionary to cause his mouth to tell his presidential staff "I vant you to blow up Alabama" when he intended to employ a translation of whatever Austrian transitive verb means "feature" or "highlight", the consequences of the resulting carnage would be both tragic and truly disturbing. Now, on top of last week's episode, we see the Governator praising the work of the Minuteman Project and giving every indication that he will cheerfully welcome this gang of white supremacists and fellow travelers when and if they expand their operations into his state. Perhaps partly on the strength of this governmental stamp of approval, the leaders of the Minutemen Project are seeking to expand their operations.... |
