Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) Persists (Apr 29 2005 23:59 GMT) - Kathleen writes "The book, The Race to Save the Lord God Bird by Phillip Hoose, was among the 2005 American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults. Science Magazine reports on April 28, 2005 that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) Persists in Continental North America. The ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis), long suspected to be extinct, has been rediscovered in the "Big Woods" region of eastern Arkansas. Visual encounters during 2004 and 2005, and analysis of a video clip from April 2004, confirm the existence of at least one male. EchoStar Picks Up More Of Voom Leftovers (Apr 29 2005 23:58 GMT) - EchoStar certainly took the long way around to getting into the HDTV satellite business. EchoStar was the company that convinced Cablevision to create Voom in the first place, to act as competition so they could get approval to buy DirecTV (a deal that eventually fell through). Later on, EchoStar bought Voom's only satellite, but Voom was left with a service without a satellite -- leading to all sorts of infighting within Cablevision over what to do with the service, before finally agreeing to just shut it down a few weeks back. Of course, then DirecTV announced plans to offer HDTV this week, and suddenly EchoStar and Cablevision worked out a new agreement for EchoStar to offer Voom's HDTV channels on its own Dish Network -- letting EchoStar leap past DirecTV's announcement in one simple move, which probably cost them next to nothing. |

Transparent Film Blocks Hackers From Stealing Wireless Signals (Apr 29 2005 23:58 GMT) - "A new transparent film called Spyguard , which can be either laminated or fitted inside windows, has been designed to block WiFi transmissions as well as other wireless signals from being accessed by unauthorized users. In addition, Spyguard is said to keep hackers from accessing information from the light flickering off a computer monitor or reflected on a window. Although this all seems like something out of a James Bond movie, the product has received an endorsement from the British government, so that may lend Spyguard a bit more credibility." Comment: other countermeasures for WiFi leakage include stealth wallpaper, which includes embedded layers of copper on a Kapton polymer, as well as special paint that can block WiFi and Bluetooth emissions. |
