The next level of geekiness (Apr 30 2005 00:20 GMT) - I've been to a couple fan conventions before - Dad took me to a Star Trek convention when I was younger, as well as a couple comic book conventions. I haven't been to any in my adult life, but recently I've enjoyed reading about anime conventions on blogs like Zannah's, and I've been fascinated with cosplay (short for "costume play", dressing up as your favorite characters) galleries on different sites. When I was reading NewType USA the other day, I noticed there was an anime convention coming up soon, and after I checked out the website, I decided I had to go! So, my pal Chris (who is so understanding of my addictions) and I are attending A-Kon 16 in Dallas at the beginning of June! I think it's going to be so much fun - I'm sure I will take hundred of photos of people in costume. |

Stonehenge (Fieldnotes by The Eternal) (Apr 30 2005 00:18 GMT) - Back around 1989 approx., a load of us went to a mates wedding in Southampton. On the long trek back north we called at Stonehenge. It was shrouded in fog, and there were few visitors, compared to today. We jumped over the wall and down to the underpass, which was possible then, and got in for free. |

Radical Professors Impose Idiosyncratic Bibliographic Procurement Proclivities Upon Students (Apr 30 2005 00:17 GMT) - One of the accepted realities of college life is that students often have to shell out a significant wad of cash on nearly useless textbooks. This unpleasant reality is tempered by the hope that, if all goes well, students can sell the texts back to the campus bookstore for a pittance at the end of the semester. However, a number of professors at the University of Maryland have disrupted what little market beauty remains in this transaction by erecting additional artificial barriers to free exchange by imposing their economic sensibilities onto where assigned texts can be acquired instead of leaving the decision up to the student. At the University, students are usually able to purchase books at the Book Center conveniently located in the Student Union at the center of campus or at the Maryland Book Exchange prominently located among the businesses surrounding the college. Yet another establishment from which books can be procured is Vertigo Books. |

Holographic Brain Theory vs the conventional model (Apr 30 2005 00:17 GMT) - One of the problems facing neural science is how to explain evidence that local lesions in the brain do not selectively impair one or another memory trace. Note that in a hologram, restrictive damage does not disrupt the stored information because it has become distributed. The information has become blurred over the entire extent of the holographic film, but in a precise fashion that it can be deblurred by performing the inverse procedure. |
