Copyright: the worthless fiat good that could save America (Apr 30 2005 00:43 GMT) - This morning I had an idea that I think is pretty cool. I think I may have figured out why governments (especially the US government) behave the way they do with respect to intellectual property (especially copyrights). It's not because of bribes or stupidity: |

A Sad Day for Poor, Elderly and Disabled (Apr 30 2005 00:42 GMT) - Medicaid has been slashed in budget targets that bearly passed Congress this week. Its actual impact will not be known for months. But it is clear that many people will be left without healthcare coverage and no means to pay for it. Missouri has already decided to end ALL Medicaid coverage. I can't imagine how they will do that without sending home thousands of poor elderly from nursing homes where they will quickly die of medical neglect. |

Dick Predicted Viagra (Apr 30 2005 00:42 GMT) - Philip K. Dick's Galactic Pot-Healer presages the appearance of Viagra and other drugs for erectile dysfunction. Dick called the remedy Hardovax, and I imagine him snickering as he concocted his less-than-delicate pharmenclature. But Viagra, evoking an ejaculatory Niagra Falls gushing-forth of your, er, vitality, could be considered yet less delicate. The book was written in 1969. |

Thin Client With OSS for Developing Nations (Apr 30 2005 00:41 GMT) - FridayBob writes "The BBC has a story on a new, ultra-thin client that a group of not-for-profit developers, Ndiyo, hope will open up the potential of computing to people in the developing world. Not surprisingly, their system uses open source software. The system runs Ubuntu Linux with a Gnome/KDE deskto and OpenOffice. From the article: 'Licences for software are often a significant part of expenditure for smaller companies which rely on computers. |

Java as a Template LanguageScript? (Apr 30 2005 00:40 GMT) - JXP is and interesting twist to the typcial Velocity type solutions in tha tyou are not learning another sub-language to use it but just re-use the java concepts you already have in your mind. Its not compiled but interpreted just like other script systems. The reason I am reviewing for possible Orca TDD Build Framework is that the purpose is to have the typical one person J2Me developer stop being a Build/QA engineer. Basically, let the Orca TDD Build Framework be the Build and QA engineer for the developer and deliver that power into the developer's hands. By having a way to script the Build Framework we reduce the complexitiy somewhat in that the J2ME developer never has to touch the Build Framework once its configured. |

Excellent Quicktime Rant (Apr 30 2005 00:39 GMT) - While reading the excellent Mac OS X Tiger Review on ArsTechnica, I came across this Quicktime rant that I had to share. Mac OS X ships with a complete integrated development environment that supports C, C++, Objective-C, Java, and all of the APIs in Mac OS X (not to mention distributed compiling, a GUI design and layout tool, and a suite of performance monitoring applications). Tiger includes a free web browser, e-mail client, address book, dictionary, thesaurus, font manager, and... |

Making Packager-Friendly Software, Part 2 (Apr 30 2005 00:38 GMT) - My previous article, Making Packager-Friendly Software, explains why software packaging is sometimes problematic due to real problems in the mainstream sources. It also discusses many issues that affect the distribution files and the configuration scripts (the most visible items when trying out a new program). This part explores the problems found in the build infrastructure and the code itself. |
