EU Commissioner for Health visits the US (Apr 30 2005 13:52 GMT) - Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, visited the United States in April 2005 to debate obesity, pandemic preparedness and GMOs. He also visited Atlanta, the city that hosts the US Center for Disease Control (CDC). Commission discloses members of its nutrition policy advisory body (Apr 30 2005 13:52 GMT) - The Euopean Commission announced the list of the 36 members of the Advisory Group on the Food Chain and Animal and Plant Health 21 April 2005 (the call for applications was launched in August 2004). The aim of this group is to provide input into the preparation, revision and evaluation of legislative proposals in the areas of food and feed safety, animal health and welfare, plant health and human nutrition. Avian flu represents a real pandemic threat (Apr 30 2005 13:52 GMT) - Many experts regard a new influenza pandemic as the most significant global public health emergency caused by a naturally occurring pathogen. In 1918 more than 40 million people died in a global flu outbreak. Since then there have been two other pandemic outbreaks, 1957 in South East Asia which resulted in 2 million deaths and a further one million died in the 1968 pandemic. ECJ rules against discrimination on grounds of nationality for assistance to students (Apr 30 2005 13:52 GMT) - The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that granting maintenance assistance on condition that students are settled in the country is incompatible with the Community Law, because it implies discrimination on grounds of nationality. Million women study finds link between womb cancer and HRT (Apr 30 2005 13:52 GMT) - A study conducted between 1996 and 2001 on 717 000 postmenopausal women from the UK has found a significant link between certain types of hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) and a woman's risk of developing womb cancer. HRT is the replacement of hormones in postmenopausal women to overcome symptoms of menopause, such as hot flushes and mood swings.
