Beer Makes You Smart? (May 01 2005 22:59 GMT) - The testimony of millions of fraternity members not withstanding, at least one recent study has said that beer and other alcohol products might make you smarter. That's to say, a Swedish team has shown that mice fed with moderate amounts of alcohol grew new nerve cells in the brain. The full implications of the Karolinska Institute research - which appears in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology - are unclear, but lead boffin Stefan Brene told the BBC: "We believe that the increased production of new nerve cells during moderate alcohol consumption can be important for the development of alcohol addiction and other long-term effects of alcohol on the brain."He did, however, add that it's possible that "the extra cells might help with learning and memory" - although we reckon the word "moderate" is key here since no-one who has ever drunk 16 pints of ale has been able to recall a single detail of the session come the following morning. |

The new number of the beast: 616 (May 01 2005 22:59 GMT) - The Indy is writing about the startling revelation (let the puns flow!) that a very old manuscript of the Book of Revelation has now been read, and the number of the beast is 616 not 666. The document is a fragment from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt (which I blogged about recently). Professor David Parker, Professor of New Testament Textual Criticism and Paleography at the University of Birmingham, thinks that 616, although less memorable than 666, is the original. He said: |

Wouldn't It Be Nice To Be Introduced to a Book By Its Author? (May 01 2005 22:59 GMT) - When you pick out a book at a bookshop, there are several ways of determining whether its the right book for you. You can sometimes tell by the cover, more often by the back cover, the "blurbs" and other than that, it's whatever the publisher has put into marketing the book.Wouldn't it be nice to have the author describe the book to you say, in a minute or less? Now it IS possible, with a special device that scans the book's barcode and plays a brief video presentation, recorded by the author, about the title. It's the creation of U. |

Philo Farnsworth: Fusor (May 01 2005 22:58 GMT) - The Farnsworth-Hirsch Fusor, or simply fusor, is an apparatus designed by Philo T. Farnsworth to create nuclear fusion. Unlike most controlled fusion systems, which slowly heat a magnetically confined plasma, the fusor injects "high temperature" ions directly into a reaction chamber, thereby avoiding a considerable amount of complexity. When it was first introduced to the fusion research world in the late 1960s it was the first device that could clearly demonstrate it was producing any fusion reactions at all, and hopes were high that it could be quickly developed into a practical power source. However, as with other fusion experiments, development into generator has proven difficult. |
