AOL's AIM to get an extreme makeover (May 02 2005 20:59 GMT) - America Online (AOL) is giving its AIM instant messaging software a complete overhaul, including a major redesign of the user interface and a remodeled underlying code architecture. The user interface is being altered to take into account that instant messaging now goes beyond simple PC-to-PC text exchanges and also includes video and audio communication, as well as connections with wireless devices. Meanwhile, the code architecture is being transformed to integrate into the product some important software advancements that have become available in recent years. A early beta version of this next-generation AIM, code-named Triton, is now available for free download at http://beta. |

Athlon 64 to go exclusively 939 (May 02 2005 20:59 GMT) - The Athlon 64 processor family will fully transition to 939-pin, AMD has told its vendors. Last orders are expected until June and will be delivered until December. Good news for everyone who wants PCI-e, or wants to snap up a bargain 754 Athlon 64 & motherboard. Another reason for this change is the X2 (dual core Athlon 64), AMD seems to be trying to rapidly ramp up production for the new chip. Leaving no room for the older design. |

Fortress: The Successor to Fortran? (May 02 2005 20:59 GMT) - "A draft specification of the Fortress language was recently released. Developed by Sun Microsystems as part of a DARPA-funded supercomputing initiative, Fortress is intended to be a successor to Fortran. Guy Steele, a co-author of Java and member of the Fortress development team, hopes that Fortress will to 'do for Fortran what Java did for C.' Steele admits that Java isn't probably the best choice for numerical computing, and that 'it's a mistake to try to make a programming language that is all things to all people... because the needs are so diverse. |

Stateline Takes on Disability Services (May 02 2005 20:59 GMT) - Stateline on Friday started out with a piece on the concerns of families about disability services in the ACT. Insult and Fucking Injury (May 02 2005 20:59 GMT) - Today I found out that there's a good chance I'll be losing my job soon. I didn't blog this, but last week I had lunch with The Big Tech Guy.
