Needing a Change (May 03 2005 23:59 GMT) - Needing a Change One of the problems with being constantly on the bleeding edge of things is that other people have trouble believing you can actually be tired of it. Besides the planning, the technology analysis and the business cases, even the "fun" sidelines like phone testing (in which I lend a hand, mostly because I have a knack for finding odd bugs and can set up end-to-end test cases with ease) begin to pall when you realize you go through more firmware versions in one year than most people go through phones in a lifetime. In case you just tuned in |

VirtualTurntable (May 03 2005 23:59 GMT) - I started this site in order to document and share discoveries about a quickly expanding, very confusing and (potentially) very expensive commodity: the music creation software that is fueling the final phase of evolution from analog musical instruments to the digital medium. The opinions and reviews here are the result of countless hours put into using and creating audio software and sounds. Hopefully these opinions are based on experience and real-world usage of these tools, but in the end, they are just opinions. |

Toward a Nuclear (weapons) Strategy (May 03 2005 23:59 GMT) - America is sleepwalking through history, armed with nuclear weapons. The Cold War left us with a massive inventory of weapons we no longer need, an infrastructure we can no longer use or maintain, and no thought of where our future lies. A shrinking community of nuclear experts holds on to a massive and aging inventory as a security blanket for a future they cannot define. That same community now advocates the development of a weapon (the so-called Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator, or RNEP) that commands no conviction from either the military or the broad policy community. In short, we are nowhere. |

Semiotics for Beginners (May 03 2005 23:59 GMT) - If you go into a bookshop and ask them where to find a book on semiotics you are likely to meet with a blank look. Even worse, you might be asked to define what semiotics is - which would be a bit tricky if you were looking for a beginner's guide. It's worse still if you do know a bit about semiotics, because it can be hard to offer a simple definition which is of much use in the bookshop. If you've ever been in such a situation, you'll probably agree that it's wise not to ask. Semiotics could be anywhere. |
