Election Results and the Dangers of Statistics [Richard Drozda] (May 07 2005 22:59 GMT) - Well, it's over and according to the BBC, there has been a 3% swing from the Labour party to the Conservatives. I find the amount of spin put out with these figures to be phenomenal by some of the media, and they can be interpreted any which way you like I can selectively pick out ones to show a Labour landslide, a massive surge in LD support, a Conservative victory, a crushing Labour defeat, a poor show of LD support, and an almighty blow to the Conservatives. They can't all be right. It seems to me you need people of great integrity to work with statistics. For example: |

University Encourages Blogging (May 07 2005 22:56 GMT) - The Guardian reports that some universities are embracing blogging and encouraging their students to blog. Warwick Univerity is one of the pro-blogging universities and they have set up a Warwick Blog hosting service for their students. Warwick University is playing a pioneering role with its Warwick Blogs project, which is available to all students, teachers and staff. The idea behind it, says John Dale, head of IT services at Warwick, was "self-publishing for all". Students were allowed to create homepages on the university's network, he says, but few bothered because it was too difficult. |
