Product music today. Via Metafilter, ... (May 24 2005 23:59 GMT) - Product music today. Via Metafilter, I recently discovered this mind-boggling collection of IT-related corporate anthems. Corporations have used songs to rally employees for decades, of course. Many companies (especially department stores and railroad companies) had in-house musical groups in the 1920s... and industrial musicals were the rage among managers, who used them to recruit and motivate employees in the 1950s and 1960s. |

Google's Library Project Challenged By Assoc. of American U. Presses (May 24 2005 23:59 GMT) - Google Inc.'s plan to digitize the collections of some of the world's biggest libraries is facing stiff criticism from a group of academic publishers who complain that the project may violate copyright laws and hurt book sales. The San Francisco Gate has the story of why academic publishers, members of the Association of American University Presses, who publish about 750 academic journals and 11,000 books annually, are peeved at the search engine's plans to digitize books in the collections of several esteemed college libraries. Givler discounted the possibility that his group will sue Google. It would put him in the uncomfortable position of fighting against universities that are cooperating with Google's library project and have publishing arms that are association members. |

MastrJW: Gedanken (May 24 2005 23:59 GMT) - I just managed to talk my supervisor into letting me use some vacation time at the last minute and will be able to go to Shibaricon this weekend. It will be my first time there, but I hope to meet a lot of people and learn some new 'tricks'. I'm really looking forward to this. I've been spending most of my time lately working or sleeping, so this will be a wonderful change of pace. |

Moodle: An open source learning management system (May 24 2005 23:58 GMT) - Distance education is becoming more important in today's connected world. Universities and schools are supplementing traditional classroom-based learning with electronic learning management systems (LMS) -- software designed to deliver on-line education... Moodle is the definitive open source learning management system. HP makes strides with laptop Linux (May 24 2005 23:58 GMT) - I've said before that hardware manufacturers in general, and notebook vendors in particular, need to do more to get Linux running on their products. Now it seems at least one major notebook maker will do just that... There's a catch, however: This offer doesn't extend to all customers. In a move that has garnered criticism from stateside Linux faithful, HP will ship Ubuntu only to customers in "EMEA," a region encompassing Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. |

Three tools to help you configure iptables (May 24 2005 23:58 GMT) - Every user whose client connects to the Internet should configure his firewall immediately after installation. Some Linux distributions include firewall configuration as a part of installation, often offering a set of defaults configurations to choose from. However, to ensure that your machine presents the minimum "attack surface" (a measure of the number of vulnerable ports, user accounts, and sockets exposed to attack) to the predatory inhabitants of the Internet, you may need to do some manual configuration of your firewall. Here are three tools that can help. |

Watchtone for your cell phone (May 24 2005 23:57 GMT) - A watchtone is a video ringtone.
