G8 Summit (Jun 03 2005 23:59 GMT) - Good old Gordon Brown. I'm not a big fan of the Labour party, though I am immensely impressed by Gordon Brown's response to the problem of third world debt. Earlier this year he wrote off all debt that was owed exclusively to the UK and in addition he made an offer to the world's 35 poorest nations whereby the UK would pay 10% of their repayments to the IMF (in case you think this is a horrendous waste of taxpayer's money, the UK's contribution to paying off 10% of the debt of Tanzania was approximately £3.5m - or about the yearly wage of a top Premier League footballer.) |
