Terry Nichols Meets With Congressman (Jul 03 2005 23:56 GMT) - Representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), who supports efforts to reinvestigate the Oklahoma City Bombing, has been trying for weeks to meet with Terry Nichols at the AdMax prison in Florence, CO where Nichols is serving his life sentence. The meeting took place last week, and LA Weekly has this extensive account. Rohrabacher is pursuing theories that Timothy McVeigh had the help of middle-eastern men to carry off the bombing. To me, as one of McVeigh's trial lawyers, the interesting part of the LA Weekly article is that Nichols' has finally admitted he robbed Roger Moore, the Arkansas gun dealer. Terry Nichols' mother is giving interviews as well, and says Terry didn't know what McVeigh was going to do with the bomb he helped McVeigh build. |

Rory Gallagher redux (Jul 03 2005 23:50 GMT) - Rory Gallagher been gone just over 10 years now. Maybe in another 10 I'll be able to do half the stuff he could on guitar. I hear he was an incredible live player too. On July 5 a new Rory Gallagher CD will be released. Amazon doesn't say what's on it, but from the price I'd hope it's at least a double CD. |

Saw War of the Worlds... (Jul 03 2005 23:49 GMT) - So we saw War of the Worlds. It was a pretty good action-packed, suspense-filled sci-fi flick -- up until the end, at least. I was actually hoping Spielberg would tweak the ending: the whole oops-we-didn't-think-about-ger twist was ingenious a long time ago, but it doesn't seem plausible enough today. We're supposed to believe that an advanced civilization planning a planetary takeover/makeover wouldn't have thought about microbe immunity? |

Five Stars for the Fifth Floor (Jul 03 2005 23:49 GMT) - Friday night we celebrated our friend Greg's birthday at Fifth Floor in the Hotel Palomar. We've been wanting to check it out, and finally we had a good excuse to splurge on the fairly expensive restaurant. Fortunately, we were not disappointed! The restaurant decor is warm with lots of dark woods -- the place has an Asian feel, although the food is definitely French in influence. The service was impeccable. |

Letters From Lehrer Reading: Or, What Would Tom Think (My Dad, not Lehrer...) (Jul 03 2005 23:49 GMT) - Last night I attended the Canstage free public reading of Richard Greenblatt's one-man show Letters From Lehrer, presented at the Canstage Berkeley Street Theatre. Apparently this show has been in the works for about three years, and will open January 19, 2006.Since it was a reading, it was stressed that the evening was about the work, and not about the performance. I totally understand this, so I will hold back on my performance comments. Also, the piece will (hopefully) continue to evolve, so what opens next winter may bear little, if any, resemblance to what I saw last night. |

Teachers and the Fashion Police (Jul 03 2005 23:48 GMT) - by TChris Another example the USA's increasing intolerance: the fashion police are harassing teachers. In Georgia's Miller County, skirts must reach the knee. Elsewhere in the state, hair curlers are disallowed in Harris County and male teachers in Talbot County must wear ties two or three times a week. It's good to know that school boards are doing the hard work that ensures an excellent education for our children. |
