Congress already requires Iraq benchmarks (Jul 06 2005 04:43 GMT) - Hidden in all the talk about pullout dates and performance benchmarks in Iraq is the fact that such benchmarks are already congressionally mandated. President Bush is facing a legal deadline to deliver what he has been most resistant to providing: a set of specific benchmarks for measuring progress toward military and political stability in Iraq. Under a little-noticed provision of the defense spending bill passed by Congress in May, Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld has until July 11 to send Capitol Hill a "comprehensive set of performance indicators and measures of stability and security" two years after the fall of Saddam Hussein [...] The information required is specific and detailed. |

More Rove (Jul 06 2005 04:43 GMT) - From Editor & Publisher, a fairly damning editorial from Bill Israel, a UMass journalism professor who taught with Rove at the University of Texas: [T]he Valerie Plame-CIA case that threatens jail time for reporters from Time and The New York Times this week is the exception that shatters the rule. In this case, journalists as a community have been played for patsies by the president's chief strategist, Karl Rove, and are enabling him to abuse the First Amendment, by their invoking it. [...] The problem, as always, in dealing with Rove, is establishing a clear chain of culpability. |

Ideology for them, not for us (Jul 06 2005 04:43 GMT) - Jesse Lee does nail it. Even while Republicans act outraged that Democrats would introduce ideology into the Supreme Court deliberations, they themselves are locked into an ideological battle over who Bush should nominate. The Dobson brigades wouldn't brook a Gonzales nomination as they doubt his bona fides on abortion rights. That's an ideological litmus test. So the bottom line for Republicans is that what's good for them -- an honest knock-em-down brawl over who Bush will nominate -- is not good enough for Democrats. |

It's not just the soldiers who suffer (Jul 06 2005 04:43 GMT) - Harkening back to an earlier war. Researchers have been probing Gulf War syndrome since late 1991, when returning soldiers reported a spate of mysterious maladies. Conclusions have been slow to arrive. Last June the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed that Gulf vets were unusually susceptible to a dozen ailments--from rashes to incontinence, hair loss to memory loss, chronic indigestion to chronic pain. But in August a Pentagon study concluded that neither the vets nor their loved ones showed signs of any "new or unique illness. |

They are more like our enemy, Part II (Jul 06 2005 04:43 GMT) - Last night I wrote "How the Islamic crazies are like the Right" to hammer home how fundamentalist Islam has more in common with the radical religious right, the American Taliban, than it does with the American Left. This is a key point-- it was easier for the Right to tie the American Left with our previous boogeyman, the communists, since we technically were nearer to the extreme left than where conservatives. But today, things look quite different. I started the ball rolling on similarities on that previous post. Here are more similarities, as submitted by readers: |

George Washington and ideology at the Court (Jul 06 2005 04:43 GMT) - Think Progress: In 1795, President George Washington nominated Justice John Rutledge to be Chief Justice of the United States. Rutledge, a former Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and current Chief Justice of South Carolina, was "well qualifed" by any standard, but Senate partisans blocked his nomination for one simple reason: |
