Serenity (Jul 16 2005 03:59 GMT) - James Allen wrote: Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom. It is the result of long and patient effort in self-control. Its presence is an indication of ripened experience, and of a more than ordinary knowledge of the laws and operations of thought. A man becomes calm in the measure that he understands himself as a thought-evolved being, for such knowledge necessitates the understanding of others as the result of thought. |

Pandemic of Brainlessness (Jul 16 2005 03:59 GMT) - James Howard Kunstler writes: The glamorous Maria Bartiromo was just on CNBC talking globalism (and China in particular) with two Wall Street cretins. China is a great play said Cretin No. 1 because they have 300 million potential middle class customers for America's manufacturers. Excuse me, what do we still make that the Chinese either can't make themselves or can't copy five minutes from now? |

Thinking is Good (Jul 16 2005 03:59 GMT) - BBC Science & Technology -- The BBC News website reporters attending the Technology, Entertainment and Design conference in Oxford sum up their impressions as the gathering ends. The brains of delegates at the conference were left buzzing with shared ideas about how to use science, design and technology for sustainable development, environmental regeneration and ending global poverty. But what was evident by the close of the conference was how the smallest ideas can sometimes have the greatest impact. It was an experiment to hold such a top-drawer event in the UK but it worked, TED chairman Chris Anderson told the BBC News website. Brits, he said were usually suspicious of lofty ideas that claim to change the world, he said. |

Getting the Goods on the Bad Guys! (Jul 16 2005 03:59 GMT) - BBC Medicine -- International scientists say they have sequenced the genomes of three parasites responsible for diseases that kill more than 150,000 people a year. Their understanding should help with treatments for Chagas disease, African sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis caused by the three pathogens. It might even be possible to make vaccines, they told Science journal. More than 250 scientists were involved in the project, including experts from the Wellcome Trust. New drugs to treat these so-called "neglected diseases" are desperately needed, say scientists. |

High Tech for the Poor (Jul 16 2005 03:59 GMT) - BBC Technology -- The best way to help developing nations is to recognise that development is "of the people, by the people and for the people", says a Bangladeshi entrepreneur. Iqbal Quadir, Grameen Phone founder in Bangladesh, told experts gathered for TED Global in Oxford that aid strategies for the last 60 years had failed. Technologies such as mobiles empowered people because they connected them. This, he said, fuelled productivity much more than the top-down aid approach. Mr Quadir had the idea for Grameen Phone, a way to get mobile telephony into Bangladeshi villages and rural areas, 12 years ago. |

Future Cities (Jul 16 2005 03:59 GMT) - BBC Humanity -- Imagining what our cities will look like in the future has long been a favourite pastime of the Hollywood movie industry. Many of world's big cities are surrounded by shanty towns On the whole we are presented with striking images of glass and metallic towering structures, flying cars and technologically smart everything. Dystopic pockets of inequality and dirt inhabit the not so shiny bits. Ask a gathering of leading thinkers in the worlds of architecture and design, and you get a rather different picture. Some 70 million people a year migrate from the country to cities. |

Searching RTF and RTFD with Core Data (Jul 16 2005 03:59 GMT) - Core Data's predicate searches are quite amazing, but a significant drawback is that it requires plain text to search and doesn't natively understand NSData objects that contain attributed text, like the target of a NSTextField, for instance. Easily solved, though, at the expense of some processing time and disk space. Time, because this trick will do a conversion each time the data object is set. Disk space because Core Data cannot do live searching on transient values, so you have to actually commit them to the store with the r |
