- With every last absentee ballot finally counted, it turns out that Fernando Ferrer just crossed the 40% threshold necessary to avoid a run-off. This in turn allows New York to avoid the bizarre spectacle of conducting an election which no one would have contested, and wasting millions of dollars in doing so. It also eliminates any lingering uncertainty and allows NYC Dems to unite behind Ferrer in taking on incumbent Republican Mike Bloomberg. Bloomie may be popular, but in a city this heavily Democratic, Republicans are very seldom safe. What's more, there are only a handful of high-profile races this November, so I'd expect this race to heat up as more people and media start to focus on it. |
