Deep in the Core (Oct 23 2005 23:38 GMT) - meehawl writes "A video of what is currently thought to be the closest star to the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy. The star orbits the black hole in a highly elliptical orbit with a period of 15 years or so, but at its closest approach it swings within 17 light hours of the black hole (around three times the distance between the Sun and Pluto). In the video, you can see the star ricochet past its closest approach to the black hole. This slingshot effect enabled astronomers to further pinpoint the mass of the black hole, which is confidently estimated at 2 million suns or so. The mass observation, coupled with the size constraints observed, indicates the object at the centre of the galaxy is definitely composed of some exotically dense form of matter. |

Outlook screws up (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - OUTLOOK posted its much awaited 'comprehensive' take on the IIPM fiasco. Shame on you Outlook. You are running a story on the Blogosphere and its collective ability to take down a story into pieces and analyse it -- In that very story you make such glaring mistakes that betray your shallowness. Irony. [Transmogrified indicts outlook]Dan Rather is a blogger? |

Scowcroft 's Scathing Critique of the Iraq Debacle (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - Via Steve Clemons: I learned from people who know Scowcroft that he finds it painful to be seen as critical of his best friend's son, but in the course of several interviews prudence several times gave way to impatience. "This is exactly where we are now," he said of Iraq, with no apparent satisfaction. "We own it. And we can't let go. |

IOKIYAR: The Perjury Edition (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - Today on MTP, the latest in the IOKIYAR Follies: On Meet the Press, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson picks up where [Bill Kristol] left off: I certainly hope that if there is going to be an indictment that says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some perjury technicality where they couldn't indict on the crime so they go to something just to show that their two years of investigation were not a waste of time and dollars. Russert reminded her that Republicans didn't always feel that way. |

Classy Move By Sherrod Brown (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - I have no position on the Ohio Senate Democratic Primary -- don't know enough frankly - but a move for Party unity deserves plaudits. I agree with Atrios: [Sherrod] Brown shifted his ad to direct people to Act Blue's general election fund. The money will go to whoever wins the primary and not to any particular candidate's primary fund. That's a class move. |

When Did The President Know And When Did He Start Lying? (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - On Meet The Press, Tim Russert, to his credit, did a very good job of reminding that President Bush and his Administration lied to the American People. In essence, Russert reminded of these facts that we have discussed often: Q: Given -- given recent developments in the CIA leak case, particularly Vice President Cheney's discussions with the investigators, do you still stand by what you said several months ago, a suggestion that it might be difficult to identify anybody who leaked the agent's name? |

Bird Flu Stories: Next Steps (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - (From the diaries -- Plutonium Page) crossposted to The Next Hurrah The long-awaited CDC pandemic influenza plan is due any day. When it comes out, much of the burden of preparation will fall on local and community health officials. We knew that was likely, but the actual release will be stark, and knowing what's coming is always helpful. From the National Journal: |

More trouble for Miers (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - Not that Republicans ever cared for preferential treatment and cronyism before, but when Miers is involved (or a Democrat), it's about the Worst Thing Ever. And on that vein, this is more bad news for Miers. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers collected more than 10 times the market value for a small slice of family-owned land in a large Superfund pollution cleanup site in Dallas where the state wanted to build a highway off-ramp. The windfall came after a judge who received thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Miers' law firm appointed a close professional associate of Miers and an outspoken property-rights activist to the three-person panel that determined how much the state should pay. The resulting six-figure payout to the Miers family in 2000 was despite the state's objections to the "excessive" amount and to the process used to set the price. |

NYTimes Public Editor: Judith Miller Not Credible (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - The New York Times Public Editor Byron Calame does not believe Judith Miller: The most disturbing aspect of the Oct. 16 retrospective was its revelation of the journalistic shortcuts that Ms. Miller seems comfortable taking. One ethical problem emerged when Patrick Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor, asked Ms. |
