World Series thread (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - Bumped... So who to root for, considering that my two teams are not in contention (the Cubs and A's)? The White Sox are cross-town arch enemies of the Cubs, while the Astros are bitter division foes. It's a wash. Futility index -- the White Sox have the second-longest futility streak in baseball (Cubs are the longest). |

Book cover feedback (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - There's a raging debate about the direction of our book cover at our publisher. Some think this design is too edgy or messy or unconventional. Others (like me) like the subversive, revolutionary feel and eye-catchiness of the design. What do you guys think? (And yeah, we changed the name from the last time I talked about the book. |

Raining on the Fitzmas Parade (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - Via Billmon and Gilliard, John Dean forecasts rain on the Fitzmas Parade: It is difficult to envision Patrick Fitzgerald prosecuting anyone, particularly Vice President Dick Cheney, who believed they were acting for reasons of national security. While hindsight may find their judgment was wrong, and there is no question their tactics were very heavy-handed and dangerous, I am not certain that they were acting from other than what they believed to be reasons of national security. They were selling a war they felt needed to be undertaken. In short, I cannot imagine any of them being indicted, unless they were acting for reasons other than national security. |

The War Over The Debacle (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - Over at the normally cool TPM Cafe, there has been a pretty hot exchange going on between the Liberal Iraq Debacle Hawks (I use the word Debacle instead of War because I think it is important that we be clear that what they advocated for is a Debacle, whether they thought it would be one or not.) and those who opposed the Iraq conflict. I won't get into the details of the debate - I think Matt Yglesias and Sam Rosenfeld wrote the definitive piece on the issue, but I wanted to note this churlish response from George Packer: Sam Rosenfeld and Matthew Yglesias have written thoughtfully about the limits of liberal interventionism. They are right to say that it needs to be rescued from the tragedy of Iraq; |

Diggonometry (Oct 23 2005 23:37 GMT) - What happens when two great SL builders collaborate and come up with a pile of crap? That's literally what happened to Jeht Pacer and Cottonteil Muromachi, both of who I've praised in pages before. Cotton sent me over a pic, I had no idea they were now working together, and it turned out so... crappy! I beamed in right away to snap the crap. |
