Finn in the Underground (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Skeletons in the closet have migrated to the cellar bomb shelter in Jordan Harrison's "Finn in the Underworld." An arresting theatrical ghost story built from such curiously matched elements as Cold War satire, child sexual abuse and horror-movie fillips -- only the latter sounding an occasional false note in Les Waters' Berkeley Rep premiere production -- this provocative and vivid piece should travel at least as far as author's widely staged 2004 "Kid-Simple."

No boom for 'Doom' (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: 'Dreamer' rides into second -- "Doom" failed to bring much firepower to the box office, leading the way in another weekend that proved mediocre, despite four openers. Universal vidgame adaptation made $15.4 million on 3044 screens, on the low end of expectations.

- Web Only: Roger Moore, who starred seven times as James Bond, says "The English press has been ridiculously unkind" to the new James Bond, Daniel Craig. "And he hasn't even started to play the role!"

The Fakir (Fakiren Fra Bilbao) (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Offering "Harry Potter"-style juvenile fantasy on a less physically imposing but still effective scale, Danish kidpic "The Fakir" is Gothic-lite family entertainment. Fun package should appeal to programmers wherever children's market tolerates dubbing, and might tempt remake offers elsewhere.

Max And Josef: Double Trouble (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Having a bossy turtle whose voice only you can hear as your best friend ain't so great in "Max and Josef: Double Trouble." First Swedish feature to blend CGI character animation with live action is a hectic but delightful family pic whose surface fantasy conceals complex -- even borderline-disturbing -- insight into one little boy's problems adjusting to a new baby sis. Only grownups will fully grasp that content, while kids will enjoy slapstick and imaginative aspects.

Gie (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Revolutionary as its subject may have been in the 1950s and '60s, biopic "Gie," about a real-life student leader during Indonesia's most turbulent era, is tediously conventional. Given the politically repressive atmosphere still prevalent in the country, pic was considered a brave accomplishment on July local release, though little of that courage will be apparent to international auds.

Keeping up with Jones (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Composer busy with 'Rich,' 'Purple' -- Quincy Jones segues between Hollywood and the scoring and mixing stages of Par's "Get Rich or Die Tryin.'" And before he heads to B'way as a producer with Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey of "The Color Purple," he winged out Friday to Cambodia.

The Nine Lives Of Korean Cinema (Les Renaissances Du Cinema Coree) (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: One of modern cinema's most exciting territories is contextualized, although not fully illuminated, in the edifying but coolly intellectual docu, "The Nine Lives of Korean Cinema." Experienced documaker, and contributor to French film monthly "Positif," Hubert Niogret takes a talking-heads approach to his subject then leavens the pie with a liberal use of clips.

Variety.com - Web Only

Through The Forest (A Travers A Foret) (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Of interest primarily as an experiment in narrative style, "Through the Forest" is less a cinematic tone poem than a hermetically sealed oddity. Latest from maverick French helmer Jean Paul Civeyrac is intended as meditation on life and death, loss and transcendence, but self-conscious technique muffles emotional frissons.

Friars of Beverly Hills renovated (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Coast club is now owned by Schaeffer -- The Friars of Beverly Hills--is the new title of the club--which has no ties to the venerable Friars Club of New York.

Duelist (Hyeongsa) (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Blades flash, costumes dazzle and the wide screen is generally bent out of shape in "Duelist," a South Korean martial artser that's determined to reinvent the genre every which way. Unfortunately, helmer Lee Myung-se, in his first movie since high-octane actioner "Nowhere to Hide" (1999), forgot to spend as much time on the script as the visuals. Result is a razzle-dazzler with a distinctly lateral approach to narrative and character, two of the genre's mainstays that any helmer ignores at peril. Distribution beyond cult ancillary looks iffy.

Strange Circus (Kimyouna Sakasu) (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Grand Guignol, Japanese style, takes center stage in "Strange Circus," an out-there yarn that shocks, provokes but ultimately bores with its tasteless indulgences. Indie helmer Sion Sono goes for the jugular. Film will be most at home at midnight fest sidebars, or anywhere else where a trash aesthetic is embraced.

Variety.com - Web Only

Big River (Oct 23 2005 23:23 GMT)

- Web Only: Exquisite lensing fails to prevent "Big River," a Japanese directed, English-lingo, U.S.-based road movie, from being dammed by dead-end narrative tributaries. Film's sheer beauty may help position it at indie-flavored fests but the faux-naif tone will be too dull for more general auds.
