12 Training Tips (Oct 26 2005 22:59 GMT) - 1) Start training your puppy early on. While old dogs can be taught new tricks, what's learned earliest, is often learned quickest and easiest. Moreover, the older the dog, the more bad habits will likely need to be "un-learned". When it comes to raising and training a dog, an ounce of problem prevention is certainly worth a pound of cure! 2) Train your dog gently and humanely, and whenever |

Nefarious Radio Waves (Oct 26 2005 22:59 GMT) - I learn via e-mail from Sawyer Broadley that the Department of State has given clearance for a limited roll-out of second generation passports. The new documents will have embedded radio frequency identification chips (RFID) which, when pinged, will transmit a string of unique characters to a receiver that could in turn confirm authenticity by checking against a central database. There will be the usual brayings of 'fascism' as the doubly secure document comes into its own--mostly from individuals in a habit of oversensing forthcoming Police Statia ever since the G-men nabbed their fluorescence-fed crop. It is difficult, though, to cull 1984 out of a computer-readable national identification document. The goal and net effect in RFID passports is not and cannot be to track individuals. |

If Mama Ain't Happy, Ain't Nobody Happy (Oct 26 2005 22:59 GMT) - dcstone writes "The Detroit Free Press reports that the failure of a Michigan law designed to protect children from adult email has disappointed Michigan parents who expected the state to protect their child from inappropriate email. "What was the whole point in signing up if it's not doing any good? Is this just the legislature and the governor trying to look good and tough, but in the end, just kicking up dust?" said Talia Goetting, a Ferndale mother of an 8-year-old, who now scans her daughter's e-mails before allowing her to read them. "I'm doing what I hoped was going to be done by the registry. |

Nearly 17,000 DVDs stolen from Gwinnett County libraries (Oct 26 2005 22:59 GMT) - Today's "Someone Stole All Our DVDs" Story brought to you by The Gwinnett County Public Library system down in Georgia. They've decided to stop offering DVDs, saying the number of discs stolen could fill two video stores. With nearly 17,000 DVDs stolen, the library system ended the program last month and began selling the remaining DVDs. "It's a shame that the small percentage of the population takes the enjoyment, the freedom and the availability of these items from everyone else," said Beth McCloy, a Buford resident who used the DVDs as part of a home school curriculum for her three children. |
