inhumanity (Nov 13 2005 23:57 GMT) - From the not-exactly-reaffirming-my-fai department: A man whose boat capsized in rough seas off the Florida coast treaded water for six hours, watching his friend die, while two boaters refused to pick him up apparently thinking he was an illegal immigrant from Haiti. Story here. |

Methodist Bishops Repent Iraq War 'Complicity' (Nov 13 2005 23:56 GMT) - Ninety-five bishops from President Bush's church said Thursday they repent their "complicity" in the "unjust and immoral" invasion and occupation of Iraq. "In the face of the United States administration's rush toward military action based on misleading information, too many of us were silent," said a statement of conscience signed by more than half of the 164 retired and active United Methodist |

Doing Robocalls the Right Way (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - Let's recap: Matt Stoller hates robocalls, those annoying, pre-recorded campaign phone calls. Matt's not alone: a lot of other people hate robocalls, too. But, in campaigns, robocalls can be a necessary evil. |

Why Robocalls Are Here To Stay (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - Robocalls (pre-recorded, automated phone calls) are spam, plain and simple. I hate them as much as I hate direct mail (=snail mail spam) or yard signs (=public space spam). But here's the first problem: effective direct voter contact is a trade-off between effectiveness and coverage, or your ability to persuade people vs your ability to reach people. Put in other words, the critical resources |

Canadiana (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - I've been reading through Canadian quotations while brainstorming on a name for a new (non-blog) project. I've come across several quotes that were new to me and I thought I'd share them here: Who knew Churchill was such a fan? Canada is the linchpin of the English-speaking world. - Sir Winston Churchill There are no limits to the majestic future which lies before the mighty expanse of Canada |

A final word for Remembrance Day (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - Patriotism is not dying for one's country, it is living for one's contry. And for humanity. Perhaps that is not as romantic, but it's better. - Canadian Member of Parliament Agnes McPhail |

Congratulations All Around (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - My sleep is messed up, yet again, so blogging has been light. But, in response to a kind compliment from DBK in a post below, I want to set the record straight on who the giants are around here. Rather than let the day pass without comment (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - Many things I wanted to write today, but my sleep cycle is severely disrupted, and while my spirits are good, my brain is too foggy to handle much in the way of writing. (That's why I'm behind on email, too, and responding to comments here; my apologies.) Most of all I just wanted to say that today is one of the days of the year that I feel the most alien in the US, and the most homesick for |

President's say the darndest things (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - Mr Bush was speaking to veterans the other day: "The stakes in the global war on terror are too high, and the national interest is too important, for politicians to throw out false charges," Mr. Bush said. No, really. The two thousand-plus soldiers who have died after being sent to Iraq to find Saddam's chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, stop his imminent attack, and thwart the attack he could launch within 45 minutes, and expose his ongoing links with Osama bin Laden were apparently very appreciative of the President's strong words. |

Car repair & insurance (Nov 13 2005 23:54 GMT) - I got more done today than I was expecting. I replaced my car headlight and made sure it was working, as I had planned. Then, since I was with my dad and I was thinking about it, we called USAA and had my car moved from my parents' insurance policy to my own. It's been on my parents' policy for years because it was cheaper that way, but with them moving soon I need it to be under my name. At my age, the rates aren't much different, anyway. |
