Windows Onecare public beta released (Dec 01 2005 05:12 GMT) - Microsoft late Tuesday opened its OneCare Live security subscription service to broad beta testing, another step toward competing in the consumer anti-virus market dominated by long-time partners such as Symantec, McAfee, and TrendMicro. OneCare, which was first announced in May, provides a personal firewall, anti-virus scanning, general PC tune-ups, and data backup tools. While some of the technologies are home-grown, others come from Microsoft's security acquisitions over the last two years, such as the 2003 purchase of Romanian anti-virus developer GeCAD and the 2005 buy of New York-based Sybari Software. |

Blue Coat: Make spyware unprofitable (Dec 01 2005 05:12 GMT) - A senior executive from the security vendor believes legislation won't curb the spyware problem; says that the only way is to ensure it is no longer profitable. The surefire way to eradicate spyware is to take away its profit motive, according to a top official from security vendor Blue Coat. Speaking on the sidelines of the Asian Internet Security Summit last week, Nigel Hawthorn, Blue Coat's vice president for international channels and marketing, noted that until the day spyware becomes unprofitable, crime syndicates will continue to propagate spyware. |

Now what about the other spyware? (Dec 01 2005 05:12 GMT) - Sony-BMG Entertainment still hasn’t addressed the other half of its use of spyware-like technology on CD-Roms, one blogger familiar with the software pointed out this week. MediaMax, a digital rights management system Sony has used on CDs in addition to the now-shelved XCP technology, automatically installs over 12 MB of software before an end user license agreement is displayed, J. Alex Halderman said Monday on the "Freedom to Tinker" blog. |

Three critical Java flaws (Dec 01 2005 05:12 GMT) - JRE, Sun's Java Runtime Environment, has serious security flaws which allow remote attackers to execute applications on a system, Sun warned. The bugs are already patched in a new release, and affect Windows, Unix and Linux platforms. The Java Software Development Kit (SDK) is also affected. Sun outlined three separate vulnerabilities, each of which could independently allow a specially crafted Java applet, for example embedded in a Web page, to escalate its privileges. That could allow the applet to read and write local files and execute applications accessible to the user running the applet, with the user's privileges. |

Naughty Allie (Dec 01 2005 05:09 GMT) - Fuck, The Walrus wishes he could ask you lazy fucks a question and actually expect to get a comment or two for an answer. He's working on something that he thinks is totally fucking cool but is wondering if you fucks would be interested in it because it would mean actually pulling that plastic out of your pocket for a chance to actually win a little cash during the NFL playoff's. You've probably played those games in bars or at the office where you get a board with 100 squares and you like pay $1.00 a square and in the end can win the pot if you happen to pick the lucky square....well the Walrus is seriously thinking about setting it up and doing it on line. |
