Installing IE6 on Linux Using WineTools (Dec 01 2005 09:03 GMT) - I was confronted one day by my wife that our new SuSE Linux computer could not access a website. My wife is an avid coupon clipper. She has found the internet to be a valuable source for coupons. One such place is Albertsons which uses Smartsource to host its web based coupons. Well what my wife saw was a webpage that posted "Our printing coupon technology is not supported on Linux". |

The RIAA - Hollywood - DRM - Linux Suicide Pact (Dec 01 2005 09:03 GMT) - The entertainment industry has put itself on the fast-track to destruction, using well-proven tactics as explained in Preventing DVD Playback on Linux Like Prohibition in the 1920's. Are their heavy-handed tactics to lock up and control everything we touch signs of plain old human stubborness? Stupidity? Insanity? A bit of each? |

A first look at Debian's GUI installer (Dec 01 2005 09:03 GMT) - Debian's standard text-based installer has been vilified in the past, so I was excited to see an announcement about a graphical installer under development for Debian. A good GUI installer could bring Debian to a lot of users who don't feel comfortable taking the plunge with a text installer. It's pretty early in the testing cycle for Debian's next version, dubbed Etch, so it's likely that there will be a number of changes before the new installer is finalized, but I took the current version for a test run and found that it's already fairly usable. |

Say it with me: Linux is not Windows! (Dec 01 2005 09:03 GMT) - I often hear complaints that Linux runs slower than Windows on the same system. For those of us who run Linux on a reasonably spec'd machine, it raises eyebrows and causes quite a bit of confusion as we know that Linux is so much faster. Obviously Linux does take some configuration to get it running optimally -- it is a hacker's operating system, so you're meant to play with it. But even a clean install of most of the distributions should perform better than clunky old Windows, surely. |

Moving a Beginner to Linux (Dec 01 2005 09:03 GMT) - If you work with computers a lot, people inevitably find out about it and enlist you to help them with their systems. Personally, I get more of these calls than I would like to admit. Though the services rendered are almost always time consuming and tedious tasks, people generally appreciate the help and are willing to return the favor when they can. This process can become much worse with chronic problems, such as the one I had been dealing with for almost a year. The computer, which soon became my arch-nemisis, was a two year old Dell Pentium 4. |
