Compatibility issues with Maxtor DiamondMax 9/10 and nForce4 (Dec 02 2005 18:58 GMT) - It seems that there is a serious compatibility issue between some of the Maxtor DiamondMax 9/10 SATA series with an early firmware revision and some nForce4 based motherboards. Some of the effected motherboards are the ASUS A8N series, the DFI LAN Party NF4, and some MSI nForce4 based boards. The problem lies between onboard SATA controller and the hard drive. The workaround is a firmware upgrade for the hard drive. However, we tried to grab the update and for some reason Maxtor gave us a hard time when trying to locate it. |

Dare doesn't like my attitude (Dec 02 2005 18:58 GMT) - Dare on my $100 laptop skepticism: Attitudes like this really, really irritate me. The same way that there are rich people and poor people in the United States, there are also parts of Africa that are less well off than others. It isn't all one freaking desert with bony kids surrounded by flies from South Africa to Algeria. For example, in Nigeria there are probably more cell phones per capita in the major cities than in most parts of the United States. |

Why can't Microsoft just patch everything? | George Ou | ZDNet.com (Dec 02 2005 18:57 GMT) - Apple, Mozilla, and Oracle have all recently been plagued with significantly more vulnerabilities and flaws than Microsoft, but Microsoft seems to be the only one that leaves a few vulnerabilities unpatched here and there. Granted that almost all of these unpatched problems are minor to moderately minor problems, but it leaves the perception that Microsoft leaves holes in their software and just doesn't care enough to patch all their flaws. Take this detailed comparison of Firefox versus Internet Explorer, it clearly shows Microsoft having fewer vulnerabilities this last year but has far more vulnerabilities unpatched, that's 6 (7 if you count this latest serious vulnerability) unpatched flaws for IE 6 and 0 for Firefox. Even though Firefox has been hit with many more vulnerabilities compared to IE, Firefox proponents can take the high road and claim victory because at least their vulnerabilities are patched If we look at Secunia's database for Windows XP vulnerabilities, we see that 22% of the vulnerabilities are unpatched. Although most of these issues are minor or moderate, the most serious one is "highly critical". |
