Kobe gets calls (Dec 03 2005 18:44 GMT) - Controversial as it might have been no one was particularly shocked Kobe Bryant got the call he did to help force overtime in the Jazz's eventual Thursday-night loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. That's not a cry of conspiracy but rather one of reality. The NBA is a star-driven league. Bryant shines. And in cases of doubt especially when a game is on the line and cameras from a network like TNT are rolling Kobe is more inclined than a Devin Brown to have one go his way. |

Good November, but not Perfect (Dec 03 2005 18:44 GMT) - November was nice, but won't suffice from SFGate.comThe calendar always provides a nice, neat dividing line for folks who like their explanations to fit neatly in the overhead bin. And so it is with the Warriors' finest November in 31 years -- it fits, and therefore it satisfies. But a season doesn't actually break down so neatly, no matter what you might read or hear, so the first real break in their season comes not at the end of November but after tonight's game against Charlotte, two entire days into December. Not that beating Charlotte will explain all that much, but Saturday morning begins a badly needed stretch of idleness -- two games in 10 nights, and no matter what the standings might tell you, the Warriors have things to fix. |

More Illegality & Cover-up at the FBI (Dec 03 2005 18:44 GMT) - Not only did the FBI bungle a terrorism investigation and drive the whistle-blower out of the agency, but the FBI is unable to determine who among its staff falsified a report with correction fluid. Is this incompetence, or willful ignorance, and does either answer mean anything less than a thorough house-cleaning is in order? (I mean, wouldn't SOP be to polygraph the lot of them?) Report Finds Cover-Up in an F.B. |

The Origin of Verdana and Georgia (Dec 03 2005 18:43 GMT) - If you know anything about web design, then you know that Verdana is the most screen-readable sans serif font and Georgia is the most screen-readable serif font. Probably less widely known is the history of Verdana and Georgia. In short, back in the mid-90's -- to help you frame this, think back to the time when Microsoft introduced Windows 95 -- Microsoft asked Matthew Carter (shown in the photograph), a world class font designer, and Thomas Rickner, a leading expert in True Type technology at Monotype, to create new fonts that would be optimal for reading on a computer screen. Microsoft wanted both a serif and a sans serif font. The result was the creation of Verdana and Georgia. |
