Police Work - Not Gun Control - Reduces Crime in Chicago (Dec 04 2005 14:43 GMT) - Chicago Tribune | Chicago reins in murder tally again. 2003 was an important year for Chicago - Chicago lead the nation in murders that year. Then they introduced more police in the worst neighborhoods and introduced new tactics to fight gang violence. The result was that 2004's murder tally was 25% lower than 2003. That drop was so steep that police officials cautioned against high expectations |

I, Cringely - The Sweet Spot (Dec 04 2005 14:42 GMT) - The step after that is technical obstructionism -- traffic shaping and other techniques to disadvantage the Yahoos and the Googles. That's where those shipping container data centers come in. Parked at the peering point, sitting on the same SONET ring as the local telephone company, Google will have done as much as it possibly can to reduce any network disadvantage. By leveraging its own fiber backbone Google not only further avoids such interference, it has a chance to gain a step or two through better routing or more generous backbone provisioning. What's stored IN the data centers is important, but how they are CONNECTED is equally important. |
