Record number of Bay of Plenty bees dying (Dec 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - Posted at 2:48pm on 9 Dec 2005 The Kiwifruit Pollination Association is calling for spraying inspections following record numbers of dead bees across the Bay of Plenty. A consultant for the association, Neale Cameron, says illegal spraying is causing many Bay of Plenty hive owners to consider withdrawing their pollination services. Mr Cameron says illegal spraying has also been causing bee deaths in Hawke's Bay, resulting in some beekeepers quitting the pollination business. He says bees have been sent to laboratories for testing and he hopes to have the results back before Christmas. |

Bees can recognize human faces, study finds (Dec 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - Dec. 9, 2005 Special to World Science Honeybees may look pretty much all alike to us. But it seems we may not look all alike to them. A study has found that they can learn to recognize human faces in photos, and remember them for at least two days. The findings toss new uncertainty into a long-studied question that some scientists considered largely settled, the researchers say: |

Varroa big threat to pastoral farming (Dec 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - The future of New Zealand's pastoral farming industry, not just honey production, is under a huge threat from the varroa bee mite. In the North Island, if the pastoral industry does not start to do something about the loss of bees for clover pollination now, in 10 years it will be in crisis, says East Coast beekeeper Bill Savage. "The feral colonies that hill-country farmers relied on for clover pollination are gone from this region and in about 10 years there will be a huge problem." Without clover, nitrogen is not being fixed to grow the grass. Free nitrogen fertiliser from clover is the key competitive advantage that the pastoral industry, the backbone of New Zealand's economy, has over the rest of the world. |
