The Ten Net Commandments (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- Just a little something to keep in mind, going into the new year. 1. Thou shalt not buy merchandise found in pop-up ads or spam. 2. Thou shalt not post thy email address, phone number, address or social security number to the internet, nor shalt thou post anyone else's.

Ten things to do with a new PC, part 2 (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- The first few hours in the life of a new computer can play a vital role in determining its long-term reliability. Following on from last week's initial health checks, setting up the Internet connection and ensuring your new Windows XP PC is up to date, we turn our attention to configuration, software installation and backup.

Anti-spyware, anti-virus on collision course? (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- A software vendor's new technique for snuffing out spyware is raising questions over whether products such as it could crash computers by clashing with anti-virus tools that have used such methods for a decade. Aluria announced it has added what it calls Active Defense Shield to its software to intercept files and detect and eradicate spyware before it resides on a machine. This type of anti-malware technique is known as kernel-driver or on-access scanning. Many anti-virus vendors have embraced the method because it opens a file to wipe out malware before it lands. But the drawback is that if two or more vendors' products try to scan at once, the machine can crash.

When home computers go haywire, more users call in the pros (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- Remember when doctors used to make house calls? These days, it's more likely to be a doctor for your computer, printer or wireless router who's visiting your home. There's a growing industry of repair people to heal the PCs and other tech devices in your home or office. And increasingly, they're available at just about any time of day -- sometimes within the hour. Among the trends fueling the demand for such services:

Beware of malicious e-greetings and fraudulent seasonal e-mails (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- A time period between December and early January is traditionally the most suitable for getting spyware or virus infection. As the holiday season draws closer, Internet users begin greeting one another, and various marketing companies as well as small merchants intensify their advertising campaigns. There is nothing wrong in such a flurry, but yearly statistics just send into a tizzy: bogus e-greeting cards, fake salutatory e-mails and instant messages, loads of Christmas and New Year spam and finally seasonal advertisements leading to insecure web sites have been used to secretly install spyware, adware, browser hijackers, trojans, numerous keyloggers and other confidential data thieves into millions of computers every year.

Mozilla issues Firefox alert (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- The Mozilla Foundation has issued a security advisory, acknowledging concerns about a potential flaw in its Firefox 1.5 browser that could cause a buffer overflow error. However, the browser company strenuously denied in its Sunday advisory that the problem would cause any lasting damage to the application. It maintains that the glitch is very easy to fix. The issue came to light last Wednesday, when the first exploit code for the potential vulnerability was published.

Circumventing Group Policy as a Limited User (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- Active Directory Group Policy settings are widely used to secure Windows systems because they can be customized to target and deploy to specific computers and users in an Active Directory-based network. In a previous blog post I warned that one of the risks of having end-users with local administrative privilege is that they can override group policy settings at will and I promoted limited-user accounts as the secure alternative. However, Windows administrators should be aware that if a user, even one running with a limited account, can execute just one program of their choice that they also can circumvent many group policy settings, including ones aimed specifically at tightening security such as Software Restriction Policies and Internet Explorer Zones.

Once the user enters such sites, the trojan begins to record all the keystrokes in order to steal user account details. Gathered data may be stealthily transferred to the remote attacker. Banklis automatically runs on every Windows startup.

Who owns an exploit? (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- When a security researcher discovers a vulnerability in a product, who really owns that discovery? Most people would agree that the credit for the find should go the security, but should that person be able to profit from their work? If you ask iDefense or 3COM you will most likely get the answer: ‘yes’. That is because these companies are in the business of buying exploits from researchers and then working with various software vendors to get the problem corrected (for profit).

The Tamper Proof Container, Rootkits, and the Sony Rant (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- All over the Internet all I see are people ranting and whining about how evil Sony is. Well, this is my rant about Sony. At the risk of taking a controversial position, I am going to have to side with Sony on this one. I believe it is entirely within Sony’s rights to use rootkit technology to protect their intellectual property. Building a Better Virus Trap (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- Not so long ago, viruses were just one of those little annoyances that come along with using a computer, akin to the gnat that orbits your head at the family picnic. But over the past few years, those pesky little pieces of code have steadily moved from simply popping up messages on your screen or deleting your Word files; they now target specific industries and serve as tools for real criminals. Unfortunately, changes happen so quickly that computer security policies struggle to keep pace. Whereas once a mere daily virus scan of a user's PC could clean up the virus problem and a firewall could keep out prowlers, today a much more in-depth, multifaceted, layered approach is the only way to truly protect your valuable assets.

Port Scans Don't Always Precede Network Hacks (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- The assumption that network port scans are a precursor to attempted hacks into computers may be flawed, according to research from the University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering. An analysis of quantitative attack data gathered by the university over a two-month period shows that port scans precede attacks only about 5% of the time, said Michel Cukier, a professor in the Center for Risk and Reliability at the engineering school. The results of the research were released publicly last week.

Users inundated with pop-ups (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- There are many examples where users are now being inundated with pop-up messages asking them to respond to things they don't know about or don't understand, and it leads to weaker security overall. Context and knowledge is everything. With it, the strangest things can make sense; without it, the strangest things sound, well, strange. For instance, I like to keep track of some of the conversations my wife Denise and I have, as many of them are positively surreal.

The worm opens a back door providing the attacker with unauthorized remote access to a compromised computer.

New chips called a danger to privacy (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- State lawmakers have crafted a bill that, if passed, would make New Hampshire the first state in the nation to regulate so-called "spy chips" in an effort to protect consumer privacy. The full House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the measure, House Bill 203, in January. State lawmakers and advocates say it represents the most complete effort so far among the states to address the use of radio frequency identification, or RFID, microchips.

Hacker attacks in US linked to Chinese military: researchers (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- A systematic effort by hackers to penetrate US government and industry computer networks stems most likely from the Chinese military, the head of a leading security institute said. The attacks have been traced to the Chinese province of Guangdong, and the techniques used make it appear unlikely to come from any other source than the military, said Alan Paller, the director of the SANS Institute, an education and research organization focusing on cybersecurity.

IE Security Update Impact to Security and Compatibility (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- We’ve heard some concerns about the potential impact of recent IE updates, and I want to give you background on these updates so you can understand the impact. It is a top goal of ours to keep users safe and web pages working as the author intended. The great majority of users and developers should not be negatively impacted by recent IE security changes. However, there is potential for any code change to change how a web page works, which is why we are very careful about deciding what changes we release.

Application Security Principles (Dec 13 2005 12:48 GMT)

- Consumers and businesses today have attained a certain level of trust regarding online activity and interactions. They don’t hesitate to provide financial information via their bank’s Web site, use Web applications to shop online, book flights via the Web, or access corporate Intranets to communicate sensitive internal information. This has presented a new challenge for enterprises as they continue to build more complex applications to run their online businesses. Secure application development requires a constant balancing act between functional requirements and business drivers, deadlines and limited resources, and risk and flexibility. Success comes to organizations that build security into all phases of their application development lifecycle.
